Default UK Citizenship - Advisers in Calgary?

Hey everyone,

I am, I believe, eligible for UK Citizenship under the British Nationality Act of 1981.

Basically, this act states that any British citizen (my mother was born there and has an English birth cert) automatically transfers their citizen ship to their child born after Jan 1, 1983 (which I am). Prior to this, you only received a right to UK Citizenship through your father, but anyone born after 1983 can get it through their mother (my situation).

I know my mum has her Brit birth certificate around, and given what I've seen, I should be eligible through this act to apply to for British citizenship.

I have no pressing need for this, but thought it would be helpful, given I have another Euro trip planned for this coming fall and, in general, holding an EU passport can help with any future travel and job plans.

Does anyone here know

A) How I begin the process

or

B) A lawyer/immigration services company that is somewhat familiar with this process?

I imagine with our huge UK-immigrant population that this is a semi-popular/common thing people do, but I am having trouble finding any detailed info on how I go about it...

Thanks!

Ironically I am in the process of doing this myself as I am planning on working in the UK. For travel an EU passport will have no advantage over a Canadian passport, but if you are ever interested in working in ANY EU country then it is a good option.

Apply through the Embassy in Washington D.C.

Do I have to go through Washington DC, like just fax it there? Not worth the hassle if I have to actually physically go there.

Registered mail to DC, you'll want it registered as it will need to contain originals or certified copies of your mom's birth certificate, etc.

I am just in the application process and am just trying to get Marriage/Birth certificates from Britian, as I was born before 1983 or whatever date they set.

I will keep this updated with any snags encountered.

Fee to be negotiated!!
