Cool New Public Art Piece in SW

The sculpture is an interpretation of a chinook arch and is being built in Barb Scott Park in the southwest.

The $370-thousand project was designed by an American company, and will be officially unveiled in June.
Sometimes you lose with this public installations (giant blue ring) sometimes you win, big.

It's awesome. Reminiscent of "The Bean".

Better than the ring, and cheaper too. I'll take it I guess

VERY cool.
What's the controversy exactly? Just more of the "Don't spend my taxpayer dollars!" nonsense from a smattering of people?

This was a 1% art cost of a bigger project, standard municipal rules. Great piece, looks awesome. Apparently it changes color when you touch it.

The only controversy is saying it is in the SW and putting it in the middle of latteville. I was excited that the burbs were scoring some sweet art.

The burbs got a hula hoop with lights on top. What more do you want?

My issue is that the 1% rule is extremely risky, it's fine when you get gems like this but it doesn't excuse the fact that it was half a million dollars down the drain with the blue ring.

Ugh, there's no denying that ring was the WORST. Visually, geographically, and economically.
Partly why I don't know why there would be controversy over this installation, it looks spectacular.

It's too good for the burbs. It needs to be in a pedestrian-heavy environment.

Because if one person doesn't like something, it's "controversial". Global warming? Controversial. Vaccination? Controversial. And then once you label something controversial, you can disregard overwhelming majorities or even scientific facts.

Apparently the fact it was designed by an American is controversial as well. The Calgary Sun put "American" in quotations and that was a bat signal for people to question it.
