Roussel deal will end up being bad. If it's not already that.

Someone has to fill the void left by Burrows, Kesler, and Bieksa.

Canucks had to fill their DB quota. Roussel is the perfect fit. I kinda liked Beagle, so it sucks that I must hate him now.
Both of those contracts are horrible though. I guess they have the cap to pay them, but you won't be able to trade either one of those players in the future.

Don’t forget Max Lapierre. He was always overshadowed by the unholy trinity but he was arguably the biggest dink of the bunch. I hated that 2011 Canucks team so much.

Those are two baaaaaaad deals. Why people sign 4th liners to mulri-year contracts is beyond me. If they were one year deals, fine, you're going to suck so trade them at the deadline as playoff depth for a 5th. Benning gonna Benning...

I love how bad these look vs Ryan and Czarnik.
Thanks Jim.

Nice to see Beagle get a big payday...good guy and an honest player who helps the team he is on.
Roussel? He can play a little bit and certainly is a grittier guy, but not sure you want to sign him that long.

boom bidding war:
Rick Dhaliwal @DhaliwalSports
Hearing Beagle to Vancouver will be 4 years and 3 million. Was 3 years and 2.5 million on Friday. Market for this player was very active, that’s free agency.

Now that's a Stanley Cup role player overpayment right there.

Like, say, not paying these guys and instead icing an AHL lineup?

I think one of the biggest mistake fans make is assuming UFA deals across all 32 NHL teams should have the same lens put on them. Vancouver as a team that likely no one feels is going to compete soon will need to overpay for free agents. Not unlike the the Flames at the begging of BTs tenure a few years ago. While I think it’s fair to question anything Jim does, I’m guessing for the most part the GMs of these teams know they need to overpay to have some veteran presence around their young developing players and to create the roster competition that will hopefully help the development of the young team (so the 180 of the old Oliers model).
The bad contracts don’t really hurt these teams, but the key is ensuring you don’t go over on term so they aren’t still lingering around when your team is truly ready to contend.

Dollars are whatever given the position Vancouver is in, but four years for Roussel? Even money bet he's bought out after two years.
