Hanifin, Bennett was offered to NJD for Hall, Vatanen
This is news of a declined trade offer that took place in December 2019.
https://flamesnation.ca/2020/10/03/c...-sami-vatanen/
Quote:
According to Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek, the Flames offered Noah Hanifin and Sam Bennett in exchange for Taylor Hall and defenceman Sami Vatanen, he said on the 31 Thoughts podcast. The deal was reportedly discussed in the middle of the season, however, the Devils liked what the Arizona Coyotes offered up better.

I saw this article was just posted recently (Oct 3, 2020), but haven't seen any discussion about it here.
Mods, please lock if this was posted elsewhere.

Reason: Clarified that although the offer was made way back in Dec 2019, news of it only came out recently in Oct 2020

I'm glad that didn't go through.
If the Flames REALLY wanted to they could sign both guys this fall while giving up nothing to bring them in.
They really were banking on taking a couple steps in these playoffs and were willing to put all their chips in to make it happen.

I appreciate the thread, but this rumor/scenario has been talked about many times in the Trade thread.
I'm glad this trade didn't happen, and quite frankly, it scares me. This is a young man's game-you can't keep giving up youth, especially for older UFAs.

What a disaster that trade would be.

Hanifin for two UFAs? What the hell was Treliving smoking.
And I'm not even a big Hanifin fan.

I like that they targetted Hall and Vatanen, but not at the expense of Benny and Brick

I believe it we reported Calgary was only willing to do the deal if the could talk to Hall about signing which New Jersey shot down

So, thats Brodie, Jankowski, Hanifin, Bennett who all somewhat knew they were going to be traded if the other team didn't kibosh the deal.
Thats almost 20% of the roster.

I don't think this is uncommon, especially with underperforming teams. A few years back when the Caps failed to advance, there was talk of Ovi being traded. The players understand it is a business, teams always have to look to improve or make changes when they aren't winning.

You are correct about Calgary wanting to sign Hall, and probably Vatanen; but it never got far enough because NJ wanted futures, we wanted a hockey deal. The story about the team refusing to let us talk to the UFA was Ottawa with Stone

Same happened with St. Louis before they turned their season around. Half of their team was put on the block

Taking a while to get to 5000

The kind of story that either fills you with dread or hope prior to draft/trade season.
Me? I lean a little more to the dread side.

Looking back, Tre is probably thankful the trade didn't go through.
There is a potential to have Hanifin, Bennett and Hall going into next season.

Hanifin for a signed Hall isn't the worst trade. Bennett has people all hyped because of his playoffs again.

It's a rumor...there are rumors about half the league. If real it would have only happened with contract extensions anyway.

Yikes. Of course same GM who wanted to buy out Neal and have him on the books for 8 seasons.
The failed Kadri trade seemed like a good one, I’ll give him that. But i’m not swimming in confidence with our guy these days.

Brodie was a guy with a year left, Bennett and Janko were disappointments in varying degrees. IMO Hanifin would be the only one who should be shocked he was part of a discussion.

If the deal was contingent on re-signing Hall as rumoured, then it's not that bad
