Adirondack Thunder 2015/2016 General Discussion
http://echlthunder.com/news/?article_id=289
Quote:
The Adirondack Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, announced today their protected list of players for the 2015-16 season.
A player being named to a protected list gives the Adirondack Thunder exclusive rights until July 1 to negotiate a new contract or offer the player a qualifying offer.
ECHL protected lists consist of players that signed a SPC (standard player contract) in 2014-15 with the member club, in Adirondack’s case the Stockton Thunder, who was not traded or released. Other players eligible to be included on the protected list include players who had received a qualifying offer from Stockton last summer for the 2014-15 season that did not sign a SPC but were not traded or released, players who were suspended by the league or member club but were not traded or released, players that signed a SPC on or after the first day of the 2014-15 Regular Season and subsequently signed an NHL/AHL contract and players who have executed the ECHL Retirement Form but were not traded or released. Protected lists may exceed 20 players.
The ECHL also announced that teams must complete all Future Consideration trades by 3 p.m. ET on June 13 and that teams must submit their 2014-15 Season-Ending Roster by 3 p.m. ET on June 15. Season ending rosters may include up to 20 players and cannot include any players who did not sign an ECHL contract in 2014-15. Any player on the season ending roster who has not signed a SPC or does not receive a Qualifying offer shall be deemed an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
The Adirondack Thunder’s protected list for the 2015-16 season, which consists of 26 players, is as follows:
Goaltenders (x2): Lucas Gore, Cody Reichard
Defensemen (x8): Brad Stebner, Kyle Brodie, Mike Busillo, Ryan Constant, Zach Josepher, Mario Larocque, John Ryder, Brad Stebner, Colin Shea.
Forwards (x16): J.T. Barnett, Matt Bergland, Jean-Philip Chabot, Andrew Clark, James Henry, Garet Hunt, Garrett Ladd, Roberts Lipsbergs, Jack MacLellan, Joey Martin, Tyler Maxwell, Carter Rigby, Vincent Scarsella, Tyler Shattock, Mike Ullrich, Klarc Wilson.
The Thunder’s protected list is highlighted by the Stockton Thunder’s five leading scorers from a season ago, including leading scorer Tyler Shattock (65GP-23G-40A-63P) and Vincent Scarsella (33-9-22-30), who was acquired midseason from the Utah Grizzlies. Four players on the protected list, Cody Reichard, Matt Bergland, Andrew Clark and Garet Hunt were members of the 2012-13 Stockton Thunder Western Conference Champions team that ended their season as Kelly Cup runners up. Hunt is also the Stockton Thunder’s franchise leader in games played (441) and points (159).
The Thunder’s protected list brings 447 games of American Hockey League experience, led by Tyler Shattock’s 258, spent predominantly with the Peoria Rivermen. Defenseman Mario Larocque, a first round pick by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, also brings along five games of NHL experience with the Lightning.
The Thunder’s announcement today of its protected list of players represents the initial steps towards the selection of the 2015-16 roster, which will take place in early October, at the end of training camp, prior to the opening of the regular season.

Congrats to Taylor Vause on the SPC with the Stockton Heat.
That green text may or may not be necessary.

Great article from one of our own on how we might utilize our ECHL team this year to develop prospects. Who'd have ever thought that the "cupboards remain pretty bare" Flames would have such an abundance of prospects that we'd have to utilize 2 minor league teams to give them an opportunity to play and develop.

While our prospects weren't great when Darryl ran things, we need to remember we didn't even have an AHL team when he was hired, so it's been slowly improving. Great article though and thanks as I agree we can make more use of our ECHL team. That's also a great idea to sign some young players to AHL contracts where we can assign them to Adirondack, such as Eric Roy. It makes for good competition.

The Saint John Flames' last season was 2002-2003, Darryl Sutter was hired as coach in November of 2002.
Sutter was named GM of the Flames in April 0f 2003 and Saint John closed up shop that summer.

Looks like it was a foregone conclusion before Sutter was named GM. It probably had a lot to do with our lousy financial situation at that time. I remember him being very big on getting our own affiliate back and rebuilding our scouting department. The results weren't there but the idea was sound.

Going back to discussing our ECHL affiliate, it soon could be the norm that new pros start in that league. Baseball uses a number of steps to bring their prospects along.

That's kind of how I've been thinking it's going to go.
I'm thinking Sieloff and Kanzig might start there next season.

"Gunnar" the new mascot for the Thunder looks creepy. Like seriously expecting the Joker to be inside the suit.

If Sieloff is down in the ECHL next year... its time to write him off as a prospect.

I think they're gonna try to get him a LOT of minutes somewhere. He's still incredibly young and really inexperienced as a pro.

The Adirondack Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, announced Cail MacLean as the first head coach in franchise history today.
"This is a special opportunity and I am eager to join President Brian Petrovek and the rest of the Thunder team in building a first-class ECHL organization,” MacLean said. “I would like to thank Brad Pascall and the Calgary Flames organization for the trust they have placed in me. I am honored to help continue the excellent tradition of professional hockey in the Adirondack region and our family is excited to become part of the Glens Falls community."
MacLean, 38, joins the Thunder with two years of head coaching experience at the ECHL level, having previously led the South Carolina Stingrays to a 78-48-18 record and two playoff appearances over two seasons from 2009-2011. MacLean’s tenure included a 41 win season in 2009-10, where the Stingrays’ 94 points were tied for the second most in the league. MacLean was named the Head Coach of the American Conference at the 2010 ECHL All-Star Game and finished as the runner up for the John Brophy Award as the ECHL’s Coach of the Year. The Stingrays ranked amongst the Top Five in the ECHL in fewest goals against in both of his seasons behind the bench and saw 26 players recalled to the AHL. MacLean also spent the 2008-09 season as an Assistant Coach with the Stingrays, where he helped lead his team to the 2009 Kelly Cup Championship.
The Middleton, Nova Scotia native also has prior ties to the Calgary Flames organization, with two seasons spent as an Assistant Coach with the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat from 2011-2013. As a member of Troy Ward’s staff, MacLean helped guide the Heat to a 76-58-7-11 record, including participation in the second round of the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs. Under MacLean’s tutelage, the Heat ranked sixth in goals against in both 2011-12 and 2012-13. With Abbotsford, MacLean worked with current Calgary Flames T.J. Brodie, Lance Bouma, Paul Byron and Michael Ferland.
“Cail brings a good mix of coaching experience, championship pedigree, and a track record of player development that aligns well with our focus in the Calgary Flames organization,” Calgary Flames Assistant General Manager Brad Pascall said. “We feel Cail will be a terrific asset to the Adirondack franchise and will demand a high level of performance both on the ice and throughout the Glens Falls community.”

This is an excellent signing by the Flames. Happy they brought him back.
He was the special teams specialist under Ward. That was his bread and butter. He had those guys working like a machine on home ice (PK was ranked 8th in the league, PP was ranked 6th in league). The biggest problem was the guys just couldn't keep it up in the visiting barn where they were ranked 27th and 23rd, respectively.
But when MacLean had them going, they were really going.
On top of that, he's a very personable guy. He's all business without being serious all the time. Calm, cool, collected. He's got an unbelievable mind for the game. The players all seemed to have nothing but respect for him when he was here. He was the polar opposite of Luke Strand (Ward's other assistant, the defensive guru) who had high energy, he was loud, he controlled the pace of the practices through emotion, etc.
In short, good hire for the Flames. As much as I admired Ward for what he did for the development of this organization, MacLean might be the best salvage from that previous coaching staff.
