General manager Doug Armstrong has signed an extension through the 2028-2029 season and will remain as the team's president of hockey operations.

Alex Steen has been promoted to special assistant to the general manager through the 2025-2026 season upon which he will become GM.

Steen? As in the center they acquired a few years ago from Toronto? He's going to a player GM? Oh... he retired 4 years ago? Geez, I'm old.

Kind of weird to promote a guy that's not far removed from being a player to assistant GM and at the same time anoint him future GM. I guess they really like him and think in two years he's going to be ready to run a team but I'm still not a huge fan of fast tracking ex-players to GM's and would prefer a GM with a long tenured scouting background and or/business operations experience.

Not quite as weird as when the Islanders named their back-up goalie as GM when he was like 35 years old.

Time sure flies though. I doesn't seem like 4 years ago that Steen hung them up. I always appreciated how he played though, same with his father.
