Default Leland Irving - Living up to his Potential?

Quote:
Abbotsford goaltender Leland Irving made 29 saves for his third shutout and league-leading 15th win of the season as the Heat began a four-game road trip with a 1-0 win over Rochester on Tuesday at the Blue Cross Arena.

I love that he's showing the promise he's had when we drafted him in the first round. Seems like last year was just a blip in the radar rather than what Irving is actually going to be like. Seems like his development is moving along just fine.

Assuming he doesn't tail off this year, I think Irving is ready to be the backup next year. Good to see after all the negativity around him in the offseason.

He played a buttload. The most in the AHL by more than 10 games from the next guy I think.

Too much actually.

Give me a rebuild with Irving and Karllson sharing the #1 duty for the next 3 years before one hopefully steps up. Load off Kipper is you can for a complete rebuild.

He was amazing his first pro year. You could see the promise with him and then you could also see he was a rookie with some of the rookie mistakes. I still believe that he will be the future goaltender in Calgary.

The way the NHL is these days, a lot of teams are doing two goalie tandems. When Kipper retires I wouldn't mind a Karlsson/Irving tandem at all, still gives them 3-5 years to develop into top goalies.

If we enter full rebuild mode I would like to see an Irving / Karlsson tandem in net. If trading Kiprusoff can get you a decent return (Maybe a top 6 forward and 1st round pick) then you make that trade.

At most Irving needs 1 more season in the minors as a #1.

Unfortunately it's not a goalies market right now, good goalies don't even have jobs anymore..

Tampa is in the market for a goalie.... They are a goalie away from having a pretty solid team!

Couple others:

Florida (Vokoun is a UFA at the end of the year)
Ottawa (Elliot / Leclaire are just not good)
San Jose (if they want to improve on Niemi / Nittymaki)
Washington

The market is small, but it's still there.

Washington won't bring in a goalie yet. They just need their offense to pick it up. Neuvirth and Varlamov are both studs, in fact I see one of them being dealt before the end of the year to one of Florida or Ottawa... probably Varlamov as he is a UFA (or RFA) at the end of the year and Neuvirth just signed for a few more years.

The idea of Kipper backstopping the Capitals though scares the crap out of me... please no!!
