Default Windows install problem

I just bought a new PC and rather than buy an oem version of Win7, I used my old XP disk. The install kept failing and giving me the same error saying that Windows has to shut down. I called the shop that built the PC and the tech support there told me that the version of XP I'm using is too old, that i need at least XP with SP2 embedded. Is this true or did i buy a dud? The PC I got is based on an i3-540 processor. I'm thinking of slipstreaming SP2 into my XP install files and burning a new disk but there's no point if its a hardware problem.

Boot up with a Knoppix disc or a Ubuntu disc and see if there's a hardware issue.
BTW, you might want to slipstream XP SP3 instead. Make sure you include SATA drivers.

Rather than messing with slip streaming, download the correct full version from Windows servers. Links here - http://www.tipandtrick.net/2008/wind...ownload-links/

Just make you you get the correct version for your key.

I might give the Ubuntu disk a try. I already have the slipstream ready to burn so i may as well do that too .

I saw that. Unfortunately, either the full XP w/SP3 never went up or MS took it down. All that's left are the stand alone S3 upgrade in .exe or .iso forms.

You're missing the "F6" driver, as it's called.

There's a couple options you have:
1. If you're using RAID or JBOD or any of the advanced disk features, you need to download the boot driver from the manufacturer's website. If you post the manufacturer of the motherboard or the OEM of the PC, we can point you to the right link.
2. If you're NOT using RAID or JBOD (and most users typically aren't) and if the motherboard BIOS gives you the option, you can turn off 'AHCI' or 'RAID' and set the SATA controller to operate in 'IDE' mode. Windows will be able to boot without the use of a boot driver.

One caveat: The boot driver for Windows XP MUST be provided to Windows Setup via floppy disk. Newer versions (Vista, 7) can source this driver from a USB stick or a CD/DVD, but unless you slipstream the driver into the Windows XP setup media, you MUST use a floppy disk for the "F6" driver. You can use a USB Floppy Drive for this purpose if you own one.

Success!

The XP install disc I have is a really old version (my recently departed PC was built in early `04). The slipstreamed XP disk worked (after several burn attempts) and I have an Ubuntu disk to play around with now. Thanks for the tips and hints.
