Well, today I just recieved Half Life 2 from Staples. To start things off my first unpleasent surprise was finding out that I would need to pay the bus depot $12 for shipping it when the first order from them had free shipping. I even bought a pack of blank DVD cases to make my order over $50 and qualify for free shipping. I wasnt too happy about that but there wasnt anything I could do to get out of paying shipping.
Then after having to install it three times(found out after the second try that you cant select not to install Counterstrike without getting errors) I found out that there was no CD key listed on the box or CD sleeves. I checked Vivendi Universal Games' tech support on sending back games without CD keys and it said to contact the store you bought it from to ask for an exchange. I emailed Staples and got a message back saying that they dont accept exchanges on open software yet they say in their help section that they gladly exchange defective software. Wouldnt not having a CD key count as defective software? I cant play the game unless I activate it with the CD key.
After finding that out I went back to Vivendi Universal Games' website and found out if the store I bought it from wont exchange it I have to send it to California for a replacement and pay the shipping. For what I'm going to have to pay for that I might as well have bought the Collectors Edition. Staples has officially lost my business.

No offense, but why would you order HL2 online? do you live in a Rural town? Not like the game is hard to find in stores.
Just take it to Wal-Mart and exchange it there... they'll do it as long as it's for the same item, and without reciept.

Because they charge an arm and a leg here. Games that you can get for $50 online are like $70-$75 here.

Staples...I can't believe there are still people who shop there.
Everyone should read RFD and learn what a fraud Staple is. The $50 you are paying instead of the $75 in other stores represents no savings but added spending after the additional $50 you've spend on shipping.
And like Jordon said exchange it at Wal-Mart, or Costco if you have a membership there. Both places will do equal exchange on anything they sell with no receipts, Costco will even do a complete refund as long as they have sold the item in the past 3 years. I once returned a completely non-functional fan after 2 years of use with no receipts and got a full refund. I likely could've bought that fan from another store and did the same thing. Totally go my $50 membership's worth.

You can take games you've bought at other stores and exchange them at Walmart?

Yes as long as they are defective and you are doing a straight exchange for the same identical item. They will do this for anything not just games. If they ask any questions just say you lost your receipts, they are far too rich a corporation to care. And their $8 an hour employees cares even less.

Cool, I'll have to look into that. There's a Walmart an hour from here in Flin Flon but their game supply is limited which is why I buy all my games online unless I know that I have a trip planned to Winnipeg. Thanks for the help.

There was a pretty big scam last year in the States involving some beach volleyball game for Gamecube last year. It was initially $50 (American) at both EB Games and Wal-Mart. EB Games reduced their price to $10. People would buy 4 copies of the game at EB, head to Wal-Mart and get their $200 "refund" and buy an Xbox or PS2.

That's why they dont do refunds now, only straight, identical exchanges
