Summit to save the Tiger underway
Big summit underway in St. Petersburg, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, to save the Tiger.
Only 3,200 remain in the wild or, according to this article, "less than the number in captivity in Texas."
My question would be, "What the frak are 3,200 tigers doing in captivity in Texas?

They'll be extirpated in the wild in our life time. Rhinos too.

I would of thought Putin would of been the tiger hunting type rather then the conservationist type. I do get a mental picture of him running down a tiger and killing it with his own bare hands.

Opinions diverge somewhat on precisely where immediate preservation efforts should focus.
They have no idea what to do.
But there's no debate that the principal initiatives have to encourage more stringent measures to prevent and punish poaching, as well as protecting and expanding the tigers' remaining habitats.
Just more eco-paper pushing and money collecting.
Sad really.

Has anyone read The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival by John Vaillant? I am nearly finished it and it is a captivating non-fiction read. Even though the Tiger in question preys on humans, I still developed a newfound respect and concern for their survival as a species because of this book. Regarding Tiger poaching in the far East, a person can make the equivalent of many years of salary in the black market off of 1 tiger kill. Many people living in these regions live in poverty that we in the west cannot even comprehend. The key problem is the high demand for tiger parts for prestige and folk medicine. Similar to shark fins, there is no actual medical value for humans, it is just a complete waste of an apex predator that has dire and unpredictable impacts on their respective eco-systems.
