Default Hundreds of cops making six figures

http://www.calgarysun.com/news/alber.../16011731.html

Quote:
More than 500 Calgary police officers earned six-figures last year, according to police data, but the top cop says it’s money well spent.
Police Chief Rick Hanson concedes some officers are handsomely rewarded for hard work, but says the number making such high earnings is very small.
While about a quarter of the force, earned more than $100,000 last year, the highest paid constable garnered about $163,000 while the top paid detective got $201,000.
“We do have very few who reach that level of pay,” Hanson, who earns about $250,000, told the Sun.

If there was ever a time where money is well spent this is it.
Cops deserve every penny they get and most are under paid for the job they do.

i agree - you couldn't pay me enough to put up with the crap that they have to on a daily basis.

i can't imagine having a job where almost every time you get called it's becuz something bad is happening and generally people are not happy to see you

I believe there are approximately 1900 sworn members in Calgary.

That's good to hear. I'm curious to know the average salary for Calgary EMS (or AHS members working in Calgary) as well as what the top positions earn there. Same goes for fire.

The Calgary Sun seems to be so anti-police it's sickening. Always trying to create a story out of nothing.

I wonder how the starting wage compares. While I have no problems with police officers earning good money, it really doesn't impress me if the money only goes to those who tend to sit behind a desk rather than work with the people and face most of the danger.

I remember about 12 (or so? )years ago, my uncle was starting out as a cop. He applied here but they were offering about $35k. He ended up in California for %50 more.

Ask Curtis McElhinney during his time with the Flames.

While getting paid that amount is a bit excessive, it is a good thing for the integrity of the force. Just look at places where there are a lot of underpaid cops and compare that to corruption rates in the same area.

Private sector pays lots of employees six figures or more for senior positions. A hundred or so in a company of 2000 isn't that far out of the ordinary. City being the same way isn't too surprising. Sun's blowing things out of proportion as usual.

Those "base" rates are before OT, regular cops make like $1000 a day in court on OT. There is a lot of fat to be cut from "OT" in the City's budget

CPS gets paid slightly better starting than NYPD cops but the pay scaling is different. Overall seems comparable.

$1000 a day in O.T? anything to back this up or is this a 4 way stop analogy?

And how can overtime be cut when there aren't enough police officers in the first place?

I wonder if they'll bring in "night court" here? my brother-in-law back east makes $120.00 a case, he made $720.00 one night for showing up in court for about 2 hours...nice! I think most were traffic violations

Still pretty much a joke, because that is what he started making back then, in US dollars.

Cops in the states should be paid 100k a year more just for danger pay.

Quit talking out your A$$.

Court time is based solely on an individual cops schedule. If court is on a regular day off he gets paid for the whole day. If it's on a regularly scheduled shift, he makes nothing extra. There are other conditions (ie. court between 2 regular days scheduled, etc) but they don't amount to much more than half a days pay.

Keep in mind, those figures are probably for massive amounts of overtime or court time. It's not like they aren't working.
