World's "oldest beer" found
World's 'oldest beer' found in shipwreck
Quote:
All the cargo on the ship -- including the beer and champagne -- is believed to have been transported sometime between 1800 and 1830, according to Juslin. He said the wreck was about 50 meters deep (roughly 164 feet) in between the Aland island chain and Finland.
The cargo was aboard a ship believed to be heading from Copenhagen, Denmark, to St Petersburg, Russia. It could have possibly been sent by France's King Louis XVI to the Russian Imperial Court.

When playing Fallout 3, there are numerous points where you can stumble across something in the game in the 'same way it was left' when the bombs fell. I loved those little treats. Made exploring the Capital Wasteland worth every square mile.
But this, this is actual living history right here. If I had discovered that shipwreck, I would be ecstatic. Surely it's been destroyed by water, but I would love to see the entries in the log.

If nothing they should pull it to the surface and chug it, hope for the best.

Who knows they might actually be able to drink it. According to the article because of the temperature it was at and the fact that there was no light down there it would have reduced the chances of it spoiling.
Quote:
"It seems that we have not only salvaged the oldest champagne in the world, but also the oldest still drinkable beer. The culture in the beer is still living."
Juslin said officials had talked to a local brewer about whether the new-found beer might be able to yield its recipe after experts decipher the brew's ingredients.
The newest find came as divers unearthed bottles separate from the earlier champagne find. While lifting a few to the surface, one exploded from pressure. A dark fluid seeped from the broken bottle, which they realized was beer.

Quote:
He said the cold sea water was a perfect way to store the spirits, with the temperature remaining a near-constant 4-5 degrees Celsius (around freezing temperature in Fahrenheit, or 32 degrees) and no light to expedite the spoiling process.

I'd give it a try. Can't be any worse than chugging back a Heineken.

Ancient Beer Recipe:
http://www.squidoo.com/ancient-beer
You are the one who handles the dough with a big shovel,
Mixing in a pit, the bappir with sweet aromatics,
Ninkasi, you are the one who handles the dough with a big shovel,
Mixing in a pit, the bappir with honey,
You are the one who bakes the bappir in the big oven,
Puts in order the piles of hulled grains,
Ninkasi, you are the one who waters the malt set on the ground,
The noble dogs keep away even the potentates,
You are the one who soaks the malt in a jar,
The waves rise, the waves fall.
You are the one who spreads the cooked mash on large reed mats,
Coolness overcomes,
You are the one who holds with both hands the great sweet wort,
The filtering vat, which makes a pleasant sound,
You place appropriately on a large collector vat.
Ninkasi, you are the one who pours out the filtered beer of the collector vat,
Like the onrush of Tigris and Euphrates.

That's practically brand new compared to the 45 million year old beer....
http://www.fossilfuelsbrewingco.com/
Quote:
This could be due to the fact that the unique ingredient for the line of Fossil Fuels beer is a yeast strain dating back to the Eocene Epoch, which is about 45 million years ago. A team of scientists, Dr. Raul Cano (Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA) and Lewis “Chip” Lambert (Fremont, CA), are partnering with brew master Joe Kelley (Kelley Bros. Brewing, Manteca, CA) and attorney Scott Bonzell (Oakland, CA) to produce what is surely one of the most interesting and unique beers of this or any time.

As CP's resident beer snob, I would love try one... provided someone else did first and didn't go blind.

And now I know where the Ninkasi brewery gets their name, and I must say I approve. They make pretty good beer, too.
