Nintendo 3DS - 3D handheld system *no glasses*

Quote:
And then it was time for the Nintendo 3DS presentation. The real hardware looks fairly similar to the mock-up that's been making the rounds. It has a 3.5" widescreen 3D display up top, and a 3:4 touch screen below. No glasses required for the 3D and you can control how much of a 3D effect you want (or even turn it off altogether). Graphics are improved over the DS but don't reach the 'near 360 quality' that has been rumored. The 3DS has a Slide Pad (which seems to be a kind of analog controller), motion sensor and gyroscope sensor. It was two outward facing camera lenses so you can take 3D photos, and one forward facing lens so you can photograph yourself.
In addition to games, Nintendo will offer 3D movies that you can watch on the 3DS. How To Train Your Dragon was one example mentioned. The 3DS also has a kind of passive multiplayer system built in. As you bring your 3DS near WiFi hotspots or other 3DS owners, you'll unlock various hidden content in your games, even if that game isn't running. Exactly how this will work is still a bit unclear.
Finally some 3DS-specific games were mentioned. The return of Kid Icarus in Kid Icarus: Uprising is sure to get old-school Nintendo fans excited. Also Miyamoto is working on a 3D version of Nintendogs...& Cats. Virtual pets are in this year, it seems.
All in all, the 3DS sounds very impressive on paper, but Nintendo acknowledges that it's impossible to convey the 3D experience on a video screen. To that end they deployed an army of PR people into the crowd, each with a 3DS tethered to his or herself. At the same time an array of Wii units rose out of the floor to show off the new Zelda. Very smart move on Nintendo's part, engaging the audience right on the spot.

Is anyone else uber excited about the 3DS? I know I am. The only thing I'm a little worried about is if this thing will cause headaches if used it too long or if outside of the 3D viewing bubble.

Hope it doesn't cause as much problems as the virtual boy. Sound cool, would like to try out out

I'm a quite into 3D stuff, but I just don't have that much need for a handheld entertainment system. I probably won't be getting one, but it'll be interesting for sure. Especially if it leads to Wii3D.
This 3D photo viewer uses a 3D screen that's probably similar to the 3DS, and it costs $500. Wonder what the 3DS will cost? (Not suggesting it'll be that high, more likely it'll make the Fuji photo viewer look extremely overpriced.)

I absolutely loathe anything to do with 3D as I think it is the biggest gimmick since sliced bread. But I am getting the 3DS on day one, along with my Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

You're getting 3D mixed up with motion control.

Agreed. Motion control got old for me real fast. I can honestly say I stopped playing the Wii 3 months after getting it. Now I just use it to play NES and SNES games.

Yeah, but I'm guessing you haven't tried 3D gaming, and therefore have no clue what you're talking about.
There's a lot of bad 3D that is gimmicky (e.g. Clash of the Titans - wasn't even made in 3D, but was converted afterwards to attract more viewers, and gives 3D a bad name in the process), but good 3D is more like HD than motion control. When you first see it, it blows your mind. Then you get used to it, but everything else sucks.

When have you ever even tried 3D gaming before to be able to develop a hate for it? You don't have a gaming computer so you couldn't have tried Nvidia 3D Vision which is the only widespread implementation of 3D gaming since the Virtual Boy.

Even if that's all you use it for, it still isn't that bad.
Use Wii Homebrew to add in the ability to play media from the network or an external hard drive, or almost any ROM for any older console and it really earns it spot beside my TV.
On the topic of the 3DS, I would love to check it out but the reality is I would only ever use it on the bus or train and in that time I would much rather be watching tv or movies on my ipod.
