Not a huge fan of this. Any time you give a company a monopoly over an area, you can expect customer service quality to drop.

Doesn't Associated have the worst cabs in Calgary?

so that's what that protest yesterday in downtown was about. i was quite confused, as i saw one sign that said "Taxi Drivers Deserve Justice", but beside it was one that said "Save the Whales"

I don't think this is entirely good idea...
A lot of cabbies make a good living taking people to and from the airport. You take that away from them and that takes away a good chunk of there wages.

Hopefully it spreads the cabs out a bit more across the city.

I don't have any issues with this. It gets rid of the clusterfark of cabs idling in the taxi queue, allows the airport to implement proper scheduling and resource management, and frees up a ton of cabs for the rest of the city.

Cabbies of other companies were complaining about this in front of the Harry Hays building, but I'm not sure why. Associated will likely move a good chunk of their fleet to the airport, opening up more downtown fares for others. Also, with more cabs downtown, people will be inclined to use taxi service, as having to search for a cab in downtown is often a difficult task, so people don't use them.
I see it as a win-win for all.

I wonder if the X 92.9 dj who blamed the government for this last night on the radio has clued in that the government no longer runs the airports in Canada.

They have a system like that in Ottawa. Leaving the Airport is exclusive to airport taxis, but any taxi can come into the airport and drop people off.
If there are less taxis waiting at the airport, it certainly frees up a lot of taxis to be used elsewhere in Calgary... and Associated might lose out on that business... it has the pros and the cons.

I've heard there are guys who are basically retired but still keep jobs as cab drivers. They hang out all day at the airport and shoot the bull with other retired "cab drivers" until it's their time for a fare and then they make some cash.

All cabs will still be able to take people to and from the airport, they just won't be able to pick up random people who walk out of the terminal.
If you call for a specific cab that cab can still go there, and if you get a cab from downtown any cab can go to the airport.

What are the chances that a cab ride to the airport will get cheaper?

This has nothing to do with the city mandated livery rates. Only way they'd change is if CAA dropped the airport departure fee ($3 on fares FROM YYC terminal). And Im not even 100% sure thats a CAA fee, even that might be city mandated

Wasn't this part of the plot of the movie DC Cab?
