Default Aspen Landing Mall

I know a Safeway and a Shoppers Drug Mart are going to be there, but does anyone else know what else will be opening up in this mall?

I heard that the SAfeway will include valet parking and that locals refused to allow a gas station to go in because it was trashy... lol... how much of that is true is beyond me... hoping a pub thats decent

We are talking 17th and 85th SW, right?

That's what the rumours were/are... pretty dumb if you ask me. I drive by the signs all the time and never stop to look what is going in. Should be a gnarly waterfall, however. I think a few fast food places are going in.

Thank god for the Safeway, I hate the Sobey's (despite being less than a block away), and driving to Westhills or Westbrook just to go to Safeways is getting annoying.

Also, I believe it was a car wash that the neighbourhood was opposed to, and I think it was slated for a different location.

That area is going to change massively in the next 24 months. At 69th, there is a huge expansion of the rec center, the new highschool, a new Christian college, and the new C-train hub. There will be like 3000-4000 students going to the 3 schools immediately adjacent to the new C-train.

Also, the province will make a decision on the west ring road, which will intersect 17th ave somewhere 1/2 way between 85th and 101st.

Hopefully never.

It was originally slated for way in the future ("2035" timeframe) but when the provincial government was awash with billions and already counting the money from their new royalty regime last year, they had started talking about moving the completion date up to 2015. They held a bunch of public sessions last fall, and were to release a report or plan sometime this spring.

There will be a Safeway gas bar, but no liquor store.

I live really close to this area. I am looking forward to completion. There are way too many choices of groceries in the area, Coop, Sobeys, the new Safeway, the Westhills Safeway and Superstore. That place Fergus and Bicks is doing really well, I like that place. But the concorde seems a little dead. Anyone try that place?

Haven't tried the Concorde Lounge, but I've heard that it is quite expensive for where it is. In fact, that strip mall has a cluster of high end businesses that don't seem to be all that busy. I guess they thought the proximity to Aspen Estates, Elbow Valley, etc. would mean affluent customers, but I think those type of people are already driving downtown with their Hummers everyday anyway, so proximity to home doesn't mean anythng for them. However, have heard that the Ladybug Cafe there may be a good place to get breakfast on the weekend.

I live right by the Westside Rec Centre - can't wait for this place to open so we can walk for our groceries (we do sometimes to Sobeys, but Sobeys sucks).

My bets on the first place to close:

Curious Skin, Hair & Body

I don't think I'd want any of those to be referred to as "curious"

At first this was confusing...

But then I Googled 'Aspen Landing Mall'. This CP thread is the first hit. What's with developments not creating websites?

Jedi, that place is pretty good for breakfast, kinda expensive though, and not a traditional menu.

Wow... is it just me or does that list look like every other generic shopping outlet we have in Calgary? The only place I'm looking forward to is having a closer location for banking and Thai Thai. And possibly Cobbs. Wish there were a whole bunch of independent restaurants or bakeries opening up, or some new fast food concepts. At least there will be gelato close by, even though Fiasco hasn't really wowed me.

I think your last sentence answered your first one.

You like gelato, but not keen on Fiasco. Someone may not like bread from Cobbs. So that location is there, but you instead drive another 10 minutes to get it at a place you like. If Johnny's Gelato was opening, maybe you will like it, maybe you think Fiasco is better. Other people would not even bother to try the new no name place, and continue to drive that extra time to go to Fiasco.

Restrautants and food in general is a tough sell. Rent for new places in affleuent area will prevent mom and pop places or new concept restaruants from starting up, and even if rent was affordable, the fact that as a new unestablished business, you're at sqaure 1 to build customers.
In a franchise, where you'll instantly gain customers who don't have to drive that extra 10 minutes to get Cobbs sourdough at Westhills.

With the amount of capital having to be sunk into a restaraunt or bakery etc, you don't have too long to start making some of that investment back (if you can even get credit...banks now especially would probably rather have the franchise name established as opposed to giving Sally Housecoat the same money to start her own place) and thus have to have customers come in and not "test" your food out for a month or two, and then build word of mouth slowly like that, people would much rather know what they're getting from the establishment from the start, and franchises provide that level of comfort.
