That is interesting, I'm not sure how a movie/TV series for this would work. It would have to be quite long to properly give the novel series justice.
I got stuck on the 3rd book back in the 90s and never got any further. I read some of the new comics but couldn't get into them either. I might go back and try to finish the series but from the bits I've read, it felt a little different but then again, Stephen King has changed a lot since starting the series in 1972 to when he finished it recently.
I'd strongly advise finishing it, a great story all-around. I'm excited to hear Howard is attached to it; unfortunately, I've also heard one of the writers behind Batman & Robin is attached as well.
The timing of this is quite appropriate for me, as I am just finishing up the 3rd book in the series. I am loving it, I only hope an adaptation can do it justice.
I think that the first book in particular would make a great movie adaptation (too bad Clint Eastwood is not in his prime). I found the fifth thru seventh books bogged down a bit, but I am sure they could be translated.
same as H & L, I started the series in the 80's, and stopped after the 3rd book, as I don't think the 4th was out yet. I forgot about them until last year, then bought them all. It is a good series, but I'm not sure how well the complicated relationships the characters have will translate to the screen. For myself I thought that was a lot of what made it a better overall series than it might have been otherwise.
If it is made hopefully he is able to keep the essence of the story (as there will inevitably be things cut out due to time constraints) and that it works well. Looking forward to it.

I don't think the first book would work. There is no hint of magic or even the tower. It's just a really gruesome western with a lot of ugly people basically into a town where everybody dies and a trek across a desert, and then into a mountain, and that's basically it...It comes across great in writing because you get drawn into the descriptions of the world, but there's really no story there for a movie.
I was lucky enough to start reading this just as the 6th book was coming out, so the timing of the 7th book was pretty much perfect. I really enjoyed them, with only a couple slow/weird points (the 6th book was not my favourite). I would love to see this in move/TV form. I mean, you could milk the heck out of this, especially if Ron Howard is interested.
Anyway, I strongly recommend finishing the books. The story is just one you'll want to keep reading. Hell, I'm sure I'll end up re-reading them at some point.
I am in the middle of the last book. What would make the movie great is if they nail the world that King invents. I was at times fascinated with King's universe. This certainly is not the best group of books ever, but I also did not think Lord of the Rings was all that great. The movies blew me away.
I don't know how they can do it without cutting out a lot of context. However I always thought they did a credible job on the T.V. imaging of the Stand. I would think that the Dark Tower series would be better done as a T.V. series.

Lol...That's funny you just posted that because I was just about to say, sure wish someone would come along and create a REAL version of The Stand as a movie as opposed to the TV series. I hated the TV series.
The Stand is my favourite King novel and I still have a paperback copy of it with the back cover reading - Soon to be a major motion picture. Obviously that fell through.
King novels are far too "adult" to be TV series' IMO. They really lose their edge on TV. The Stand as a 3 hour movie would have been fantastic.
If The Shining was released today it would be considered a crap B movie, I watched it on AMP the other night, Jack was crazy but for the most part it had very bad acting and zero flow.
Then again, I suppose you could say that about a lot of old classics.
