Tires, or parts for your vehicle. The tires that would cost me $1200 here....I got them shipped to Oroville Washington and pick them up myself for $620. Even after I bring them accross the border pay PST, GST, the 8% Asian import duty, and over pay a local shop to put them on the rims I'm still $350 ahead.

You might want to wait until the dollar is higher so that your cc company might then actually give you a par rate. You are still going to get dinged 3% or whatever.
Even on US dollar accounts you dont get the floating rate. Its another classic bank scam.

How is it a scam? They sell US currency just like any normal business selling a product. With a mark up for profit.
They even post the cost of US currency. Its not like the price changes when you get to the counter. When you buy something at Safeway, the price is right there for you too.

Which is why I advised the OP to wait because while the financial industry sponsored media might say our dollar is at par, if you buy something the dollar currently isnt at par.
I can bypass Safeway and buy my food the Farmers market, I cannot bypass the banks when purchasing currency.

You said it was a scam. How is it a scam?
If you buy it at the Farmers market, you would also be paying a mark up. How come you're not b*tching about that?

A blueberry muffin and a diet coke.
At a 7-11 in San Clemente California on Saturday morning it was $2.50 USA and at a 7-11 in Calgary this morning it was $3.02 CDN.
And yeah, probably real estate, although their real estate tends to be inflated by the deductibility of mortgage interest. But that's a permanent thing.

If you're going to buy real estate in the US you should probably consider setting up a family trust and do it properly....

The cost of gas, wear and tear on a car, as well as the time spent driving to Washington makes the $350 dollars look not so great a savings. If they could ship it up here for that price, that's a different story.

in my opinion, any disposable income should go towards buying physical gold and silver or pay down your debt if you have any. spending money 'just because' is not a good idea.

Why so you can pretend you're living in 15th century France and buy salts and spices from your pouch of gold sovereigns?
