Alberta sees 'disturbing' jump in syphilis infections
With 263 cases of syphilis confirmed in 2009 - seven per cent more than in 2008 and a huge increase since 1996, when the province had no syphilis cases

Not a surprise since Edmonton signed Comrie last season.

What's even more scary......the 12-20 demographic has likely seen the biggest increase. Admittedly that's pure speculation (at this point) but there have been a lot of revelations about youth promiscuity (specifically sex without protection) in the news/papers recently.

The numbers should go down, there's less chance of catching it since ETS isn't as available these days...

Isn't Banff like the STD capital of Canada?
And this is not really anything new - they've had "anti-syphilis" ads running on buses and trains since last Stampede, obviously due to a provincial problem. Nothing new here to note.

Makes sense with the decline in religion an all, and the influx of people from the coast looking for jobs

God I hate arguments like that.
Bluntly, having gold medal Olympians are more important than fighting a disease that affects 8 in 100,000 people in this province. Gold medal Olympians encourage kids to get active and be in better shape, which does far more for the health of the population than the OMG! EVERYBODY PANIC!!!1 attitude medical people like to take.

More like the province chose to fund million dollar bridges instead of having the balls to implement a functional sex education course.

I wonder if there is going to be another correlational increase in the spread of more harmful diseases such as HIV?

I imagine with Alberta, year after year having the largest net interprovincial migration (or in Ralph talk, creeps and bums) for the last 15 years, many of those chasing the pot at the end of the rainbow, has something to do with this too.

I'm willing to bet there's more chance of getting an STI from some random floozy you picked up at a bar or club than an actual prostitute, granted the prostitute is of the slightly higher-end variety. Not like Tiger Woods higher-end, more like just not-a-$20-blowjob-in-some-poor-sod's-car higher-end.
