2009/10 Cleveland Browns Thread - The Dogpound
http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/foo.../teams/browns/
Total Heat Index: 30/50 -- There are questions galore about the Browns, even if you assume Mangini is a great fit with this team. Will the eventual starting quarterback play well? Can they run the ball consistently? Who will catch passes besides Edwards? Is anyone going to step up in a pedestrian-looking secondary? Can this team win at home? Overall, there are too many unanswered questions to expect this to be a playoff team in 2009.

Tonight, the Cleveland Browns play at Chicago against the Bears in the final organized practice game, with a full allotment of television timeouts.
The final score will be meaningless, but there are some matters to be settled for the Browns. The starting quarterback competition between Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson is the featured attraction, with other intriguing tussles including the battle for the No. 2 receiver spot and starting center berth.
Who will QB the Browns? Anderson or Quinn - I think Anderson.
according to Forbes magazine's annual valuations of the league's 32 teams.
The ranking, released late Wednesday, lists the Browns 13th, with an estimated value of $1.03 billion -- unchanged from last year.

Does Brady Quinn have a shot at starting this season?

Quinn will win it because Browns fans from Ohio will riot if he doesn't.

Is this the 'official' thread?

It must be a tough spot to be in Troutman. Manginni, who blew the whistle on your beloved Patriots on the whole spygate scandal, is now the leader of your beloved Cleveland Browns.

Spygate never bothered me. I wish the Browns would have hired Shanahan or Cowher though.

I think Browns fans were rated third best in the NFL in an article last year.

Browns fans are some of the most dedicated in the NFL. Cleveland is a football-crazed town year-round, and its loyalty has been tested like no other city. Cleveland lost its team to Baltimore following the 1995 season, and the "new" Browns have taken nearly a decade to get it together. Yet the fans remain rabid and hopeful every year, sometimes to a fault. Cleveland fans travel well and the "Browns Backers" are one of the NFL's largest and well-organized fan groups. About the only thing lacking is the stadium atmosphere, which has yet to reach the level of the old Municipal Stadium.
What's not to love - best uniforms in the league! So awesome, they don't even need superfluous logos on the helmets.

Smart coaches like Shanahan or Cowher are going to pick their spot. Some teams / franchises have terrible ownership that are just destined to fail for whatever reason. The Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals are good examples of such teams.
ps.
The uniforms are one of the best in league history.

Adam Schefter is reporting that Eric Mangini has reached his QB decision. He just isn't telling anybody.

The Browns coach did not play either quarterback Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn in a 26-23 loss to the Chicago Bears. Has he made up his mind on his starter for the regular season? Or was he protecting both from injury as a precursor to a trade?
Earlier in the week, the Browns filed a waiver claim on former New England backup quarterback Kevin O'Connell, but lost out to the Detroit Lions, who had first dibs.
All of these events may amount to nothing or to a shocking resolution of the Browns' quarterback quandary.
Eric Mangini kept nearly all of his starters off the field Thursday night, which means there was no obvious resolution to the quarterback competition between Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson. At the same time, another strong performance by James Davis may put the rookie closer to a featured role in the backfield over veteran Jamal Lewis.
Fans think Anderson will be traded.

I have an issue with the bolded content, as Edwards cannot catch passes either.

Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini will keep Vikings guessing about starting quarterback
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/inde...eric_ma_5.html
"I've made a decision," he said. "I'll clearly explain [to the quarterbacks] what the decision was based on, why I made the decision that I did and what my expectations are. And my expectations will be clearly that they support each other at all times, they support the team at all times and they both prepare as if they were the No. 1 quarterback."
He said announcing it publicly is "not something I plan to do. I understand everybody has a different opinion on it. I respect that, I understand the excitement in relationship to that and I respect that as well. But it will be internal."
He stressed that it will force the Vikings to spend time watching film of both guys.
