I think this thread will end as quick as it starts, but whatever. My apologies to shane_c who's thread was knocked into the nether regions of page 2 because of me.

Anyways, I stumbled across this one song by a band called 'The Pogues' entitled 'Whiskey in the Jar' (yes, Metallica covered it) and I really enjoyed it. So in typical gen-x fashion I showed my support for this newly discovered band by illegally downloading a bunch of their songs off of Kazaa. Basically i'm just wondering if anyone out there is a fan of these guys and can recommend any of their songs/albums to me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

"Fairytale of New York" is probably their most famous song. It's a Christmasy themed ditty though and you should probably be wearing a sweater and be within one month of an egg-nog expiry date to really enjoy it.

On another note -- I'm no expert on the alphabet, but I'm not sure you are "generation x" if the Pogues are a newly discovered band for you. The song was released in 1998, 3 years before the terribly over-rated book called "Generation X".

Am I mixing up my generations? Curses. 1985 here, this would make me what exactly.........

I'm likin' the response so far, 2 replies already and it's getting late. Keep it up!...

EDIT: Figured it out for myself, I was one letter off. Gen-X = 60's - 70's, Gen-Y = 80's-90's. Eeeeep, i'm derailing my own topic though! Disregard this entire post.

I don't mind the pouges, which really is a compliment because generally speaking I am not a huge fan of the more traditional irish music with the voice around that of Barry Maguire (who penned the ultiment protest song by the way).... some good songs, and the one that sticks out is Dirty Old Town...

Ha ha. I don't know what the letters mean either so don't take my word for it. I was born a long time before 1985 but I'm a lot younger than the guy who coined the phrase "Generation X" so I'm as confused as you. By my calculations, if you were born in 1985 then you are probably Generation B2, maybe a C1. I hope that helps.

I quite like the Pogues. Came to know them through Fairtyale of NY but I own a couple of their albumns and enjoy them a lot. Though you have to be in the right mood.

When I was in Scotland a few years ago I went to a pub in a small town where a band played covers of Pogues songs all night. It was a fantastic evening.

I love the Pogues. I have hunted down a few of their albums and own a few of Shane Macgowan and the Popes albums too.

Macgowan has got an amazing voice in my opinion, his duet with Sinead O'Connor is unreal, same with his What a Wonderful World cover with Nick Cave.

Anyone going to the Rumrunner concert on March 17? Its an entire night of Pogues covers.

Try to get If I Should Fall From Grace With God if you can find it, it's their best.

Well you and I are both wrong I think. I did a 5 minute search on the internet and I think Thin Lizzy, The Pogues and Metallica all covered it as it is an old Irish folk song from waaay back when. I originally got into the Pogues cause I told a friend I didn't like Metallica except for 'Whiskey in the Jar' and he said that that wasn't even their song and they'd covered it from an Irish band. So I just assumed, heh.

Concert of all Pogues songs hey? Interesting...

Yeah out of all the songs I downloaded 'If I Should Fall From Grace With God' and 'Thousands Are Sailing' are my two favorites so far.

Thanks for all the other suggestions from everyone else too...

Aha, thank you. I think I read somewhere in an interview with the Pogues that Shane MacGowan fellow remakred 'anything we've done has either already been done by the Dubliners or they could do better.' Guess that definitely rings true when it comes to 'Whiskey in the Jar'.

Thanks for the link...

The song mentiond before with Shane and Sinéad is titled Hunted, although not me favourite verson of it, but there is a video version of that song recorded at the White Room on April 26, 95 that i like much better

The Pogues are definitely one of my favorite bands... I love some of the old Irish folk music. But you can find some great combinations of Shane MacGowan playing with the Dubliners such as "Irish Rover". There is also a book floating around about his life... I've seen parts of it and it's just crazy to hear some of the stuff he's done.

While I don't mind the pogues I find Flogging Molly to be far far better.. Especially their album within a mile of home. I've been a big fan of these guys for years, but within a mile of home blew their other albums away in my opinion.

I have that Floggin Molly's CD as well, it is quite good, but I don't think you can fairly compare that to what the Pogues have done. To each their own though. For a bit of a local feel you should check out Fairhaven... some good stuff there.

Flogging Molly wouldn't exist without the Pogues. I am a big Flogging Molly fan and I still don't think they rack up against the Pogues.

I wasn't comparing them at all. They are quite different, I'm just saying I prefer them to the pogues. I haven't given the pogues a lot of listening time however. I have a lot of their music, listened to it quickly, and it didn't appeal to me right away. I do come from a more punk/metal background so thats probably why I prefer Flogging Molly. Honestly I think you would still have bands like flogging molly without the pogues, but I'm sure they were an influence.

I think Dave King said the Pogues, Johnny Cash, and the Clash were his main influences.

Flogging Molly is like the Pogues with more of a punk sound.
