Third vote for cakeworks! Not sure how far in advance you need to order. Wedding cakes need to be ordered WAY in advance - it's crazy. But occasion cakes are probably a little more reasonable.

Well, considering you're on your third? child, I'll believe the former.....
Another vote for Cakeworks. The designs are nice and the cake itself is really tasty.

If you're looking for a cake that looks like the cakes on TV Cakeworks is definitely the place you're going to want to go. They are really the only ones in town who are capable of doing that kind of work.
Big, big warning though: Cakes that look like this:
Almost invariably taste like garbage.

Just keep in mind... for a custom cake... you're going to need $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. We got one for my son's first birthday from Cake Works. All it had different from any other cake was a Baby Einstein them, with some of the characters on it... nowhere near the elaborate cakes shown in this thread...
IIRC, ran us close to $100. (PS - Enough to feed about 12 people tho)

I used to work at cakeworks about 10 years ago and they were great people that made great product there. Bring your $$$ though because it is not cheap.
And nice work MissTeeks. A lot of people don't realise how time consuming and difficult it can be to produce cakes like the ones you displayed there. You are pretty good, I bet you could go into business.

One thing to remember is that if you want the cake to actually taste good, you probably don't want to go with one of these custom cakes. Basically all fancy looking cakes use fondant (that harder outer coating) to allow for various shapes to be sculpted etc. But fondant tastes like ass imo. You can always take it off when eating, but that's a bit of a pain.

Thanks! I eventually want to get into cakes as a real business, right now it's just for friends. And they do take a good chuck of time to do, about three days.
Fondant doesn't taste that great, but I make sure there is enough buttercream underneath so you still get icing if you pull off the fondant. Or I use marshmallow fondant, which is just made from melted marshmallows and a lot of icing sugar, it tastes a bit better than the store-bought stuff. These three were my first foray into carved cakes and fondant.
