The hunter saw the animal so he wanted to shoot in the air to scare the beast but did not even have timeto do that - the cougar was already approaching a dog. Here is the incredible part of the story: the mule snatched the cougar up by the tail and started whirling him around banging its head on the ground repeatedly. Then the mule dropped it on the ground, stomped on it and held it by the throat. The mule got down on his knees and began to bite the creature a dozen times.
My dad raises pack mules, and they're weird creatures. I know for a fact that they hate dogs, and won't hesitate to take them out.....he has a border collie with one eye and no teeth to prove it. Coyotes won't come anywhere near his farm, probably because they fear for their lives.
They love people though; they'll run up to you and rub you like a cat looking for a scratch, then turn around and try to kill your dog. So yeah, even though the story might not be true I'm pretty sure any mule wouldn't hesitate to try and take out a cougar.
Lots of ranchers in the area have mules around for just that reason . . . . they'll beat the crap out of coyotes or anything else that gets too close to something valuable.
A cougar though . . . .

We had a cougar sighting a few mornings ago near our place southwest of the city . . . . . and the farmer in the valley claims a wolf is around right now. There's a strange howl that causes his dogs to cower up against the wall when they'd normally be barking back at the coyotes. About eight years ago, I saw a wolf near our place, confirmed by a neighbour.
I better get a mule!!!
