I was gonna say, "how is that possible?"
I think I could only watch a maximum of 6 hours if I came straight home from work and didn't do anything else.
I watch maybe a max of 3 right now. But that's pretty rare. Probably average closer to 1.5. Sometimes none.
It's pretty crazy to think that someone can spend 1/3 of the day sitting on the couch doing nothing productive.

I'm scared to click on your weird looking link. I don't need my work computer getting a ton of malware.

I saw that earlier, I have a very hard time believing that.
I probably watch an average of 1 hour of TV a month.

Seems a bit steep, for sure.
Still, I know that a lot of people pretty much just leave their TV(s) on all the time, and only really watch it a fraction of the time. It's just noise to many. But I guess that could constitute "watching" TV... I donno.

You sure they didn't mean web surfing? Cause I definitely would meet that standard. I probably spend that much time on this website alone!

It can be pretty subjective I think. I spend a lot of time studying for exams I take every 6 months, so I have the TV on some sporting event virtually all the time, but I'm sitting at the table studying, glancing at the TV when my brain needs a break.
Would that be considered "watching" TV?
But 8 hours for an average is still really high. If you work 8 hours, commute 1 hour, sleep for 6, watch tv for 8, it's not quite adding up... something is getting sacrificed for the least important activity on that list.

Keep in mind, they call it an "American household" so that means one family. So conceivably, stay at home mom can watch her soaps for a few hours during the day, kids come home, watch cartoons for a couple hours, teens watch their mtv, and dad comes home in the evening and watch a couple hours of primetime. I guess in that way it can easily add up to 8 hours a day.

I agree, our household would have the tv on for at least 8 hours a day. Especially with my wife at home with the kids.

I guess you can up your weekly average by putting in a good 16 hours each day on the weekends...

On average though? I can see how some households could reach 8 hours a day (as others have said in this thread), but are there enough of those households or are there enough that significantly exceed 8 hours to make up for those houses that don't even come close?
I call BS on that stat.

(*disclaimer* - haven't read the link)
Many houses also have multiple TVs. So if Mom & Dad watch 1 TV and each of the kids have a TV to watch their own programs then you can get multiple hours of TV watched by a family with only one hour gone off the clock.

So let me get this straight you post on a "hockey" forum and you don't watch hockey, that seems odd.

I watch about 3-4 hours a day......except on Sundays during football season. I'm a such a cliche......sitting for 10 hours watching football, with the laptop in front of me watching my fantasy team, eating crappy food.........sunday is easily my highlight of the week. Then when all the football is done.....I have all my Sunday shows to watch. It really feels gross, but I deserve one day a week to kick back and melt into the couch after working 60-65 hours a week.

I wonder if they count 2 people watching 2 different TV shows on 2 different TVs for 1 hour as being 2 hours. I'd imagine they would. In that regard, it would be pretty easy to rack up 8 hours per household.

Yup, that's pretty much me as well. Two weeks ago I extended that to Premiere League and NCAA football on Saturdays. It was a very lazy weekend. My girlfriend is probably the only thing that prevents me from doing almost 24 hours straight of sports, drinking, and gambling on the weekends; but she knows not to FKKKK with my Sundays.
