Why stop in Vancouver? Either day trip it (catch the last ferry to Nanaimo, then a short drive to Parksville) or stop somewhere nicer.

What time do they estimate to be in Vancouver? and is it during the long weekend? Are they looking at a high star hotel or just for a place to stay? The reason I ask about what time they come in is that a lot of hotels charge for parking, but if they come in late at night and take everything into the hotel it would be cheaper to park on street. If they are willing to stay in downtown (between 45 minutes and an hour to horseshoe bay) you could probably find a hotel under the $160. Depending on the hotel $160 seems pretty high. I work at a hotel in downtown Vancouver and know that they aren't as busy as they'd like to be and some have dropped prices to low season rates.
The following hotels in downtown might have prices under 160 and probably closer to the $120 per night range: Both Ramada's , Days Inn, Howard Johnson. Otherwise try searching for hotels in North Vancouver which would be even better for them travelling to Horseshoe Bay they should also be cheaper.

That's what I said, but they're set on stopping in Vancouver overnight for whatever reason, so I'll leave that to them.

It's going to be the weekend after that. They're staying the night on the 8th and leaving the 9th.

I wouldn't stay downtown unless you have to -- hotels will be more expensive, and why bother making that extra trip, with the parking and traffic?
If you're looking for something just off of highway 1, I would suggest something in Surrey or Coquitlam. You can probably find something in the $80 to $130 range, depending on what you're looking for. I've stayed at the Sheraton Guildford in Surrey (got a staff discount through my dad) -- it was pretty nice, and would probably stay there again. Check out expedia for more info on hotels in the area; priceline/hotwire if you're looking to save a few bucks...

Nothing that isn't a crack house will be cheaper in Vancouver. Unless your parents are planning on going out to some nice restaurants that night, there would be no point in staying in Vancouver
Stay in a place off the highway.

Surrey or Langley will likely be their best bet. Already mentioned, the Sheraton Guilford is right off of the highway and shouldn't be too much.
There's a new hotel/casino off the highway in burnaby too which looks pretty nice if they want something a little better. I think it's called the Rio.

Since it's the week after the long weekend you should be able to find rooms cheaper than the $160. Expedia has the Ramada Inn and Suites in Surrey close to Highway 1 and is $84 for the night and free parking.

What's with the Vancouver bashing? As much as some of you hate the hockey team, Vancouver is a world class city. Sure the downtown eastside is an eyesore, but I have seen things in Calgary that have troubled me. For instance, I saw a homeless camp right outside the Calgary Tower when I visited Calgary a few years ago.

There really hasn't been that many posts ripping the city in this thread. Most people have been pretty helpful.

I think he was referring to Phanuthier's post at the beginning of the thread. Implying that there is somewhere nicer than Vancouver is a huge slap in the face to the Vancouver ego.

Yeah, I think maybe the first reply to this thread could be the only one close to a Vancouver bash.

I think vicphoenix13 needs to grow a pair if they think thats a slap in the face
You got Salmon Arm, Kamloops, maybe Kelowna, along the way. Versus Abbotsford, Surrey, and Vancouver for a nights stay along the road trip?
