I'm interested in umping, but I haven't taken the course. One of these days maybe.

I ump little league and some Jr high and i havent ever had to take or been asked to take a course. I know if i wanted to umpire Highschool i would have to get a card and take the course. I guess i get a lil leeway since the people who own the parks still remember me playing there and i played all the way through college. Its actually a pretty good gig. When i do little league tournaments, I usually do 10yrs to 12 yrs old and i get paid 20 bucks a game cash . This weekend i did 20 games in 3 days. I also get all the free food and drink i need. When i do Jr High or little league away from the city ( small towns around where my family live) i get 35 bucks a game if i have a partner or 60 bucks if i can do them by myself. It gets to be pretty lucrative since i get paid well and i enjoy the work immensely. This is just a 2nd job but i love it. The only downfall is it is 100 degrees outside right now and that sucks. We started umping late February though and it will go to November or so.....

I used to be a carded ump in Ontario but haven't done any since I was a teen. Even then I just did some low level minor ball, I just needed to have a card for provincial playoff games.

I umped Little League (specifically, ages 10-14) for 4 years as a teen when I lived in Canada. Fun times. Good way to really learn the game, appreciate it in a different way, and improve your focus and power of observation.

As for pay scale, it was pretty meager. Something like $10 per game for the youngest ages (they called it "kid pitch"), maybe $12 per game for minors (usually 11 y.o.), $14 per game for majors (usually 12 y.o.), and around $17-$20 per game for Juniors (13 and 14 y.o.) I think. Of course, that was 7 years ago. Our seasons (not including rep teams, all stars, regionals/provincials/nationals, etc) were April thru June.

Well thats a short season but i know why...... i actually just got a gig , believe it or not for 8 year old girls machine pitch and they offered me 45 bucks a game ..... they said they were in a bind and my aunt gave them my name so they called. I quickly took it ..... 14 games in 2 days = 630 bucks.... not to bad

I know here they pay high school ball 75 bucks a game for each umpire. They usually play the Jv followed by the Varsity so i guess High school makes good money for 2 games a day. The only difference in High school is they send you check and tax you for it if you make over 2500$ a season.
