Default Household Pets

So I live in a Condo that doesn't allow big pets (cats, dogs, tigers... etc)

Well anyways, I'm looking to get a small pet for fun like a fish or a hamster. Anyone have a suggestion on a pet?

I'm leaning more to a hamster/gerbil than a fish as I can at least play with it but if the maintenance and cleaning is too much of a hassle I'll get a fish.

Also, how about the costs associated with each? I've never owned a pet in my life so I have very limited knowledge in these aspects

Thanks in advance!

I would reccomend getting a couple of fire belly toads. They're about $20 and can be found at most pet stores. They're relatively easy to care for and look really cool, and last quite awhile (15 years average life span)

Guinea pigs are cute - there are some at the Calgary Humane Society looking for adoption.

Between those two get a gerbil. I had both when I was a kid, and gerbils loved to play whereas hamsters loved to sleep. Also when (not if) they escape, a hamster will just find a hiding place and you will never see him again; whereas a gerbil will come looking to see why you stopped chasing him.

I had a hamster once and then it got out of it's cage and we didn't see it for the longest time. Assuming the worst, we got another hamster. By the end of that day we had two hamsters as the other one showed up.

My 7 and 5 year old boys want to get a hamster. Will they lose interest in it in one week?

Aquarium maintenance (done properly) can be a lot of work. I spend about one hour per week on mine.

Yup nothing like having another enourmous wandering around the place competing with me for the chicks.

I had one as a kid. Biggest issue is they are nocturnal. It sleeps most of the day away and runs around at night.

Mine chewed all the spokes out of its wheel. So I got him a metal wheel. That wheel squeaked.

All in all, it was a cute pet but not a very interactive pet.

Haha, well I'm pretty scared of toads/frogs, snakes etc.

What kind of things do you need to take care of a gerbil?

According to gerbil expert Richard Gere, an empty roll of toilet paper and a quick route to the nearest emergency room.

why not a small dog or cat.

what the condo board doesnt know, wont hurt them. So long as the animal isnt loud when you are away, they will never know.

I am a dog person, but a cat is less maintenance and less noisy.

Sea Monkeys. They're easy and when you get tired of them just flush them.
