Default Back yard fire pits

Should the City of Calgary Ban the use of back yard Fire Pits?

-Yes

-No

-A permit should be required to use a fire pit.

I'm curious to see what the CP
community thinks about Calgarians being allowed to have back yard fire pits for the few months of summer.

This issue seems to get a bit more "Heated" (pardon) every year, I've heard rumblings that the issue is going to council and there may be a ban.

....Thanks CMPunk for the "Poll" Info.

THX.

I like back yard fire pits. I like them even more when I can burn my garbage in them while my neighbors have their windows open!

I think they are fine but there should be regulations. Our neighbours just put one in and it is too close to our fence between the properties IMO. But I would have one if my daughter was a bit older. What is the harm if they are placed properly?

I think there's already a regulation regarding distances... maybe they should enforce them? However, that would require permits and inspections.

For a "conservative" city, Calgary sure has a lot of laws...

I'm positive there's a whole bylaw chapter regarding firepits. Probably a whole book. There's bylaws for pretty much anything and everything. If you have a complaint, call 311 and they should send out some bylaw employees to check it out.

Directly from the City of Calgary Webpage.....

Firepits

All fires must be:
  • In a fire pit or non-combustible container. Firepits must be built into the bare ground or set on non-combustible material, such as brick or stone.
  • At least two metres away from the property line, building or fence, and not beneath any trees, branches or other combustible materials.
  • Kept to a reasonable size (under one metre both height and width) so the fire, embers, sparks and dense smoke don't endanger anyone or cause a nuisance to any neighbouring properties.
  • Fully supervised at all times.
  • Fully extinguished by 1 a.m. They can be relit after 10 a.m.
Use only clean, dry wood, and you must have a way of extinguishing the fire close by at all times. Fines for breaking these regulations range between $300 and $5,000.

You know those back windows you love having open at night? I won't be too fond of it when there is smoke coming in.

It is ######ed they are allowed. Thankfully most people never use them if they have them, but for the dopes that do...FRACK YOU!!! They are stinky and they attract white trash like flies to crap. Go camping if you want to behave like a caveman.

I love fire pits. The yard should be big enough though.

When I was but a lad, one of the rites of passage into manhood was learning what things will and will not burn in a fire. Pop cans, plastic bags, chunks of hair, hot dogs, barbie dolls, mustard jars, craft projects, three ring binders - these things and more were fed to the flames in order to make a connection to the distant ancestors who first wondered, "hmm - ya think we could burn Thak's ratty old goatskin jacket and have it completely gone by morning?"

Remember, when you outlaw fire, only outlaws have fires.
