Default English language - spelling, grammer, etc

This is kind of a spin off thread from another one where the discussion turned to spelling, grammer, etc.

Many of our younger generation have taken to short cuts, not only in typing but in speech as well. It seems to have caused some of the generation to have problems in spelling and text in general. Some have even gone so far to freely admit that due to easier forms of communication, IM etc. their vocabulary has declined.

Even I, had been caught doing an "LOL" or CYA. when I should have probably just typed out the entire phrasing. However, I should probably get to the point.

I came home one evening and found my 14 year old daughter watching a show called "America's best dance crew" Some very talented young people, I must say. Then the wierdest thing happened. I started to listen to the judges critique the acts. There was a guy who was in one of the Boy bands who started and spoke quite well in his critique of the band but then it moved on to a young woman that I believe was called Lil Mama.

To this day, hour, minute, second, I have absolutely no clue what that lady said. Talk about taking the english language and making a complete mockery of it. Please, tell me I am not the only one that finds that odd?

Has anyone watched the show and listened to this young lady speak? Please tell me this isnt the norm for today's youth?

I've heard lil' mama speak, and it's more a case of ebonics rather than text message acronyms/truncations. Ohhhhh-kaay?

Exactly, what does that mean?

anyhow, no matter what its called, I believe an earlier post called it "Ebonics", how does one even begin to understand that?

Remember the scene in Airplane, when the Black guys are feeling the effects of the food poisoning, and the old lady comes over and says she can translate, because she "can speak jive."

Ebonics is just the 21st century version of what was called jive in the 70's and 80's.

Is dis da person youse talkin' 'bout?

I dunno. I do find it interesting that the size of mobile phone keyboards is having an effect on vocabulary knowledge/usage of young people. But I don't think this is a measure of how intelligent the younger generation is. The older generation always find the younger generation lacking. We GenXer's were viewed as lacking ambition and ingrates.

I think most of all, I look at my little nephew who is only 3. His grandmother (my mother) was playing with him and Winnie the Pooh and poor Pooh said "I'm hungry and it's winter and there are no bees to make me some honey". To which he replied "Silly bear - you were supposed to be hibernating through the winter". I don't think I knew too many 4 syllable words when I was three. When I see just how quickly kids today are developing and how fast they are learning I have trouble pulling out my cane and complaining about kids today....

Don't worry. I'm in the 'younger generation' and I don't even know what stuff like that means.

Devils'Advocate you are absolutely right, and I know I must have sounded like a old fart when I started this thread. Every generation complains about the one coming up and you are correct, many of our youth are highly intelligent. There is more expected of them in school and they have access to so much more information than when we were kids. The internet has made most people experts on almost any subject.

Ken0042, I thank you, I had almost forgotten that our generation had its "quirks" as well. The Airplane scene holds completely true to how as to "how some things change, some things stay the same"

I agree with this. The youth of today are better at multi-tasking than their parents, and their knowledge of electronics and communications technology is superior, as well. The general intelligence level may not be a problem.

However, language is not one of these strengths. It is truly awe-inspiring how bad some fellow university students are at spelling and writing. If you based intelligence on language skills alone, the majority of kids today would seem like morons. Is this characteristic of people of a certain age, or simply of the world at large?

Ebonics is supposed to be borderline incomprehensible, it keeps changing just enough to make sure of it. Doesn't differ from any other slang in that respect.

I'm really jealous of British slang. I have some british friends and I love some of the slang phrases and words they use. I wish I had an accent so I could say them without sounding like a moron
