Default Finishing Basement - Plumbing Next

Looking to tap into the collective wisdom of CP here.

I am developing my basement (well ... work has slowed a bit ... God, I hated electrical) and it seems that the next logical step is to begin plumbing for a simple bathroom.

I am wondering what the city will be expecting in terms of work completion for the initial plumbing inspection. When we bought our place, we paid whatever it was to have the developer 'rough-in' the plumbing in our basement which seems to include a waste stack for a sink, a toilet waste pipe and the same for a shower/bath.

How much work will I have to do to satisfy this initial inspection - or am I already there? Looking forward to getting some drywall up so I can see some changes happening down there.

I'm not an expert but it sounds as if you're there as long as you're not changing rough in locations (e.g. toilet).

e.g. In Ontario the toilet needs to be at least 5 feet from the stack. I presume it's the same in Alberta.

edit Possibly, maybe they might want to see evidence of your ventilation stack to the outside for your bathroom fan?

When I did mine I only needed 1 inspection (the final inspection) since the rough-in was already done. It wasn't that long ago so I don't think it would have changed, though you can always call 311 to confirm. There isn't really much to inspect between the rough-in and final - you pretty much just have to run the water to the bathroom and install everything.

I had to rip open my floor to do my rough in. A few things that they looked for:

- backwater valve installed. (My inspection came a few months before this became code, so the guy was happy I had it.)
- proper venting of drains
- Shut off valves for the water supply.

The City of Winnipeg's website has some great PDFs about what the homeowner should do, some tips and tricks, etc. And the code between Calgary and Winnipeg isn't that different.
