Pretty big trade for the Raptors.

Meh. Marion will be gone at the end of the season as he's a UFA, IIRC.

I never liked Marion. He hated being in the shadow of Nash and especially Amare in Phoenix and was always behind Beasley and Wade in Miami. Now he goes to Toronto to play in the shadow of Bosh?

A great talent, but a headcase. The Raptors blow.

Well obviously this trade was to clear cap space for the summer, as O'Neal -> Marion is CLEARLY a huge step down in talent. As much as I think O'Neal's overrated, Marion IMO is the most overrated player in the NBA.

I like this deal for the Raps, Marion can come in and play strong D, for most of his career he has been pretty healthy. Moon wasn't exactly loved by his teammates anyways. Raps also cut the 22 mill price tag on Oneal who clearly is not worth anywhere near that, especially for 2 seasons.

EDIT: Huh I did not see the 1st in the deal

It's hard to get excited about the deal IMO. A first round pick and a player with a dang near untradeable contract included for a guy whose best days look like they are behind him.

They move salary cap room for next year to this and it costs them a 1st rounder?

Marion has to resign for a reasonable deal or they need to use the 12 million or so in cap space to pick up a good player or this deal will suck.

Pretty lateral move in terms of on court assessments. This will neither make them better or worse in the immediate future. Marion may be a 4 time all-star but I always thought he only benefited from playing with great player and will always be considered part of the supporting cast. As mentioned before this does clear cap space to throw towards a big name free agent. They will have to overpay to land anybody with whats going on in the center universe. I just can't see any star player with any desire to win want to choose Toronto as their destination. They get harder and harder to give a damn about every year.

I suppose he hopes Marion resigns and he can go after Marvin Williams in the offseason.

According to a party with the details of the deal, the Heat will receive a first-round pick from Toronto in 2010, unless that pick is among the first 14 (lottery) selections.

Should Toronto be in the draft lottery in 2010, in essence not make next season's playoffs, the Heat then would receive a 2010 second-round pick from the Raptors.

The first-round pick then would be sent to the Heat in any year, from 2011 through 2014 that it is not among the first 14 selections (the next year Toronto makes the playoffs).

Should the Heat not get the first-round pick by 2014, it then would receive a 2015 first-round pick from the Raptors.

In addition, the Heat gained a $4 million trade exception in the transaction, which it can use to balance salaries in a deal for the next 12 months. To complete the transaction, the Heat will send cash to Toronto, with $3 million the maximum allowed by the league in such transactions.

I didn't know about this giving up pick madness.

Ugh, lousy trade. We better have a hand-shake deal with a free agent.

So basically we traded

Rasho for nothing
Ford for Banks
2 firsts for 1/2 year rental.

The Raptors essentially sold the Heat a 1st for 3 Million. This is a pretty standard price for a pick in the NBA. Every year 2 or 3 firsts are sold at the draft

I can't believe Toronto needed to give up a first-rounder and take Banks. I thought it would be one or the other. I like the acquisition of Marion for the short-term, as I think the Raptors balance on the court will be better than it's been since 2006-07. Most years I like the strategy of getting expiring contracts and then snapping up UFAs in the offseason, but I really don't see anyone out there who is better than Marion this year, at least in the SF or SG positions where Toronto needs help.

I'm trying to get excited about this deal as I've been watching for it for weeks, but it's just not happening.

Raptors win this trade as Oneil was essentially a bench player in the emergence of bargnani. Marion adds skill to a position where it was lacking and banks is a solid backup. Interesting how the first round pick turns out that will be the decider

The second I heard about the first rounder ALONG with taking on the salary of Banks, I was totally pissed. However, correct me if I'm wrong, but seeing the terms of that 1st round pick, the Raps are not giving up a top 14 1st rounder until at worst, 2015. I hate giving up picks, but at least it's some solice it's very very unlikely to be a top 10 pick. Pat Riley did a very nice job of holding out until last minute for this. Giving up Jamario was the "addition by subtraction". And I thought I'd never say this, but I'm glad it somewhat allows Graham to move up to get some more playing time.

I'll personally miss O'Neal's grit and mouthing off when he gets on a roll. I was hoping they'd deal him next year when every idiot team tries to clear cap space, but oh well.

I like what Marion can do for this team. I'm not too sure about his attitude and what that would do for Bargnani's confidence, since they both have very similar outside games, but I still like what he brings. I really don't care at all for this season, so I hope they don't make the playoffs to get a higher pick, but I'm interested in how Marion works out with them and if it does, if he'll sign in the offseason with them.

Anyone who gets rid of Moon wins. The raptors win.

Moon should go back to the harlem globetrotters. Worst decision and frustrating player to watch since mo pete. If Moon only rebounded and not shoot he might make it in the NBA. too bad he makes such horrible decisions.

I LOVE THIS TRADE.

I think Marion is one of the best raw athletic talents out there. Finally the Raptors have some defence again. It's been brutal since Garbojosa broke his leg.

Yes, he is a UFA at the end of the year, but this might be a chance to show him the city and get to know Bosh to see if he wants in long term. It also sheds the O'Neil contract so they can go out and address some issues in the off season should Marion want to move on.

Marion can be a huge deal and for a team right on the edge of the crapper, why not take a risk in this?
