Don't see how they'd work... He'd have to be in the perfect position for them to be effective. Too far in or too far out the size would appear to be different than the net. Pads would also have to be held vertical or the line alignment wouldn't match the net as well.
To his credit he's a high school kid ... I think it's a pretty good idea. As it says in the article, they probably don't offer a whole lot of advantage when there is time to shoot, but in a close-in situation with very little time it can be confusing.
