NBA Rumour: Marion to Cavs
Rumour only, below is stolen from Hoopsworld.com
As the Cleveland Cavaliers relentlessly try to accumulate talent to surround MVP favorite LeBron James, the unending question is this: Do they dare mess with a franchise on a collision course with the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference finals?
The Cavaliers have had ongoing discussions with the Miami Heat about an Anderson Varejao and Wally Szczerbiak for Shawn Marion trade, a league executive familiar with the discussions said.
So, here is what the Cavs are asking themselves now: Do we dare?

Jeez that would be a BIG move.
This deadline is going to be an interesting one. Marion is rumored on the block. Same with Wallace in Charlotte. You're even starting to hear whispers about Redd in Milwaukee going if the price is right.
I don't think they'd be able to take Boston... but watching Lebron and the Matrix duel it out with the Boston trio would be damn fun.

Man if Marion goes to the Cavs they will be awesome. Marion can shoot out the lights. So with Lebron driving it will be open Marion up on the outside. Plus with Mo Williams they have two outside shooters. If Big Z can become a force again, I think they can beat the Celtics.

Is it Marion who is supposed to be a selfish headcase? I don't follow basketball that closely.

There were rumors towards the end of his tenure with Phoenix that he was jealous of the attention that Nash and Stoudamire recieved. Apparently he didn't like them getting all of the spotlight.
But in terms of the basketball world, his ego isn't half that bad (see Stephon Marbury).

If he didnt like being in the shadow of Nash and Amare, how is he going to handle LeBron's? Marion is an unreal talent, but if the Cav's can get Redd for less, that's the guy that'll help that team.
I think LeBron and Marion play too similar styles. Although Mo Williams has looked excellent this year, having Redd on the perimeter to get kickouts from LeBron, Wallace, Ilgauskas, etc... would be a nice balance.

Marion's kind of a ######bag, he wanted out of PHX because he didn't get enough recognition - playing with an MVP PG is so tough.
Marion would add athletiscim and defense to a team that is sorely lacking of it (outside of LeBron of course), he's not a great offensive player - more of a terrific athlete that plays basketball.

Well those were only rumors.. who knows if they were valid or not. Marion hasn't struck me as a bad teammate personally, but what do i know?
You're right about Redd though.. he's a perfect fit. You add Redd to the Cavs (at a reasonable price), and that team can challenge the Celtics.
Essentially it's a two horse race in the East and a complete gongshow in the West.

There were rumours last year that Utah offered Kirilenko for Marion straight up. SOOO glad that didn't happen, even though Kirilenko's kind of a cry-baby.

This rumour doesn't even make sense for Miami or Cleveland. Shawn Marion is on the hook for 17 million this season and Miami would be acquiring 25 million in return for Varejao; a lanky undersized centre, who gets in foul trouble and Wally Szczerbiak who is a liability on defense and is constantly on the IR. I'm not a big Matrix fan, but he looks pretty comfortable as the second fiddle to Dwyane Wade. There was already talk about him being traded earlier in October, but he had said that he wouldn't report to any team and that he liked playing Miami.
Whoever came up with that is probably in cahoots with Cleveland management and and really just trying to spice up interest for Lebron to stay since it is an inevitable destiny for him to go to New York.

If the rumor is true then he is pretty stupid enough to be jealous at Nash because this is the same guy that makes him good with all those passes. Without Nash, he is an average player.

As a Cavaliers fan this trade scares the **** out of me. Shawn Marion is one of the most overrated players in the league, and I really like the way the Cavs are playing right now.
To say that this team lacks defense or toughness or rebounding, is absolutely ridiculous. Do you watch basketball? Cleveland is the top defensive team in the NBA right now, allowing only 90 points per game. They have the third best rebounding differential in the NBA also, at +5.08 per game.
They're 20-4, and to mess with that and acquire someone as overrated and as much a liability as Shawn Marion would be downright stupid.
His production has fallen so far from when he was in Phoenix, especially his shooting percentages, which show you just how much of an impact having Steve Nash dish you the ball actually makes.
Michael Redd would fit nicely, on the other hand, as someone else suggested. The guy is a career .388 shooter from 3-point land, averages over 20 a game for his career which not many people can say, and is in his athletic prime at 29 years old, so he can learn the Cavs defensive system and fit in pretty easily.

Yeah, but you want to have Marion on a strong defensive team because he is so deadly in transition. Plus, LeBron (and Z) are going to get Marion the same calibre of shots that Nash was getting him. Seems like a case of 'buy while the stock is low' and its not like you'd be selling the farm for the guy.

This thread should really say, "Rumour" somewhere in the title. It's an extreme speculation and I don't think it would ever go down.

I would not even trade Varejao straight up for Marion, nevermind throwing in Szczerbiak.
