I think you'd have to define 'social cesspool' before I could discuss my thesis on the subject.

Cowboy...your a pretty smart guy. lemme see if I can clarify. You have people coming from all corners of the country...at times the world, to work and live here. In turn, you have different ideas, cultures, cliques and attitudes (regional, provincial and global). This could very well make for a melting pot of something that could not taste very well or something that could taste very good. I've seen much good come from people here, but at the same time, I've seen some pointless maliciousness and unprovoked evil (for the lack of a better word).

Depends what angle you look at it from.
From an artists standpoint (plays, music, galleries, exhibits, etc.) Calgary has started to turn the corner on it's previous years of being Canada's Cultural Wasteland. It's getting better.
On the personal interaction view however, we now deal with more jerks, people who care less, and that 'big city, small town heart' feel has gone to total hell.

The way you've phrased your questions seems to imply that you believe these "evils" were never in Alberta before; that newcomers are responsible for these "unprovoked evils".
I haven't followed things that closely but that Jeremy Steinke kid seemed pretty home grown. Albertan through and through. Way more fubared than any "newcomer".

I like the original poster's name and avatar. Suits this thread well.
I don't have a problem with the people that are here, I have a problem with the Premier that makes us look weak.

What? Hasn't it always been?
It's turning the corner but this city is still quiet as hell after 6:00, downtown is a ghost town, and there's nothing except gangsters shooting each other at night.

I think Alberta and all of Canada are among the best places in the world to live. Afghanistan and Somalia are cesspools, whether socially, politically, economically or whatever. Edmonton too (not really, just couldn't resist a gratuitous Edmonton shot).

well, bigot, to start off we don't have a melting pot in canada. That is what our american friends do.
In Canada, we have a mosaic. each person brings their diversity, adds to the mosaic, and the big picture gets better.
To call diversity a cesspool is absolutely disgusting. Diversity makes us stronger. Alberta will not be able to sustain itself by 2012 if we do not increase our population and Canada does not have enough of a skilled worker population to make such migration possible. We have to look outside of our borders to do it. People like you, or "cesspoolers" make it harder for the overwhelmingly legitimate foreign workers to come into Alberta an contribute. Instead, the cesspoolers propogate antiquated myth and reputations spending their entire time trying to convince themselves that their prejudices are indeed accurate.
abosolutely brutal.

At first I was going to come into this thread and say yes... but then I realized that my definition of social is different than what's going on in this thread.
So. if by saying social cesspool you had meant that things are becoming less friendly, then my answer is yes. Culture/race/ethnicity didn't really pop into my mind.

I think you have the wrong idea of what is being said. Regardless of whether empty and blanket words like melting pot or mosaic are applied, the fact is that we have a lot of diversity in people in Calgary and yet it's a city that feels very isolated from itself and people from each other. There is not enough interaction, culture, arts, or just things that bring people together in large numbers or places of vibrant activity or entertainment. That's why it's a "social cesspool".
Look at a city like Montreal, live there for a few months and the difference will knock your socks off. In the summer, every day of the week, on the weekends, etc. there are always amazing festivals, huge gatherings, parties, live music, performances, dance parties, or even just thousands of people getting together in a big public park to play with bongos.

Your username seems kind of curious for someone of aboriginal descent. I assume that you are of aboriginal descent, for to be otherwise would be hypocritical from the position taken in your post. Or is this a case of the "melting pot" calling the kettle black?
Not long ago, there was a situation where a guy had moved out here from Ontario to work and did not have a place to live. He was beaten to within an inch of his life by some locals while sleeping. Is that the kind of unprovoked evil you are talking about? Or is it only the outsiders that cause problems?

I really do think that diversity makes us stronger. I don't just say it, I live it. I make a good portion of my living doing immigration work. 99% of my clients have no issues, but I find it really difficult when I hear from the rare few who are given a rough time by some uninformed ignorant prick.
yeah, this kind of crap does strike a chord with me.
