Congrats on the new home theater setup, MacDaddy77. It sounds like you have the HDMI hooked up properly... shouldn't be any problems there. Are you able to get a video signal from both sources with no trouble?
I can't really troubleshoot your problem without a little more info. My guess, though, is that it has to do with the audio configuration or input setting on your receiver. If you want to try figuring it out on your own, you could try reading through the owner's manual, and then checking the Troubleshooting section for any helpful hints. Or, it could be that the specific receiver you purchased is unable to accept\process\pass audio via HDMI. Hopefully this isn't the case.
First off, what brand and model receiver is it?
Also, what brand and model of in-wall speakers do you have hooked up?
Finally, what type of speaker wire did you use to connect the reciever's surround outs to the speakers?

Its a Yamaha HTR6040B receiver.
I'm not sure what type of in wall speakers i have.
i used generic speaker wires. I asked the guy at Best Buy and he said they should work.
i'm going to hook my old Cd player up to the speakers tonight and then I'll know if it's the speakers or not.

Sorry i should have answered your questions first. Everything work fine to the tv. it's just sound from the receiver to the wall speakers that i'm having trouble with.

I purchased a home quite a few years back and had the same issue. I pulled the face plate off of the wall and low and behold, the speakers weren't hooked up to the faceplate. Once I connected, I got sound.
Hopefully it's that simple.

It sounds to me like you are trying to make this far more complicated than it needs to be. Let me explain:
Issue- speakers aren't working.
Why is the word HDMI even coming into the equation right now? The issue has nothing to do with HDMI; it's the speakers, right?
Take the receiver and verify the speakers outputs do work. Use the tuner to test. Once you know they do work, take a 'AA' battery and connect it to your wall speakers. You should hear one soft 'pop' sound. Connect the 2 wires together again to discharge the energy in the speakers. You will hear another pop.
Then test the wire, and then test the speakers themselves if you can by running a wire outside the wall to the speakers- assuming you can get at the speaker connections from the outside.
Once you have the speakers working, then start monkeying around with hooking up other devices. Eliminate all the variables that are outside of the problem.

Looking at the following backpanel image of your amplifier, I notice one thing counter-intuitive about the layout, where the "B" speakers are grouped with the 5.1 outputs and the "A" speaker outputs are where I would expect the "B" speaker outputs to be, so I could easily see myself connecting the fronts to the wrong set of outputs:
http://www.yamaha.ca/av/Receivers/Ba.../HTR6040_r.jsp
Having said that, make sure your fronts are connected to the "Front A" on the bottom right at the back of the amplifier. (Silver lead to black, copper lead to red...) Then make sure that your "A" speakers are active by pressing the A/B/Off button on the front.
Oh yah, and as mentioned, test using the "tuner" on the amp... maybe even verify with a set of headphones that you are tuned into a channel, if necessary.

You should hire yourself out on the side and make some extra cash. There are countless numbers of people who buy electronics but have no clue as to setting things up properly.

No! Actually I took the receiver back and am going to get a new wireless surround sound system. I was going to have geek squad come out but they wanted $200.00.

Actually $200 seems somewhat reasonable for them to come out.
Yes, it is one of those jobs that maybe you "should" be able to do yourself. Or a job that you would try to bribe a buddy with pizza and beer. But keep in mind what your time and sanity is worth to you- plus the fact that hooking up a wireless system is no easier than a wired one.
And the following words are given with kindness and not intended to offend, but if you weren't able or willing to troubleshoot the current system, what makes you think this new one will be any different?

Yeah. If I were you (and I'm very much not), I'd definitely think about ponying up the $200. I've never done a wireless installation like that, and though I could doubtless find a good tutorial online ... at some point, it just isn't worth it.
If you have some spare time on your hands are you can look at it like a nice DIY project (almost like a hobby?), then that's something entirely different. It depends on your priorities.

Be careful of the services Best Buy sells.

On the left side of the demo, they had a HDTV tuned to ESPN, and on the right, there was the exact same model of TV presumably tuned to the same station, but with a far superior picture. The difference between the two was remarkable; the left one was grainy and blurry while the right one looked sharp and detailed. Thinking that something was not right, I took a further look at the demo and realized that the inferior tv on the left was turned to plain old ESPN, and the superior tv on the right was tuned to ESPN HD.
