Default 8 year old shoots himself to death with an uzi at a gun show

Father of the year contender let his son fire off an uzi with predictable results.

I don't have a problem with this. It's sad, but it happens. Can't change the law because one stupid parent didn't think his kid couldn't handle it.

Is the father responsible legally? Maybe not, but he is morally responsible. Mother is rightly pissed off and devastated, but when I was a kid I knew better than to shoot a gun. Even at age 8. Stupid parents make stupid kids, and you can legislate who gets to procreate.

This should count as a Darwin award, because although the father isn't technically removing himself from the gene pool, he is removing his broodlings.

I've been to a shooting club before... not a place I would take a kid.

OMFG!, Just because a licensed instructor is standing beside you nothing can go wrong? WTF! He was an eight year old firing an uzi, there is no way that he would be able to handle that. Then the thing is they were letting anybody fire anything, handguns, shotguns, machine guns. Just wow.

Well done. Everyone knows that kids and guns are a great mix. While they were at it why didnt they get the kid liquored up first and go for the Genius Trifecta....

Wow letting an 8 year old kid shoot anything like that is stupid. I don't know how many of you have fired an uzi, but unlike the movies, on full auto the barrel tends to rise and kick to the right in a strong adults hands, let alone an 8 year old kid. Basically the first round or 2 might hit target but after that your punching holes in the sky.

Incredibly bad judgement by the father and the instructor.

I don't have a problem with teaching a child to shoot a gun. I would never let them shoot fully automatic (you can't here anyway), but this stuff happens.

I remember shooting 10 rounds or so out of a mag on my C7 after doing the rundown at the range in Edmonton on full auto and that had some major travel upward to it. Would never let a kid do that. Probably even more travel with an uzi because there is not much weight there.

You should have seen the upward travel with the FN C2 that we used in our day. We had to stop shooting when planes flew over the firing range because of the extreme range and velocity of the rounds.

I can't think about blame right now. To lose a child must be the ultimate heart-break.

This is the most ridiculous thing i have read in a while. The kid should have took both the dad and the instructor out too.

What is the point of shooting automatic weapons for fun?
Isn't the wii blaster enough?

Not just an 8 year old. I wouldn't have the strength to hold and fire an uzi.

Course an 8 year old might be stronger then me. I'm very small.

How qualified was this "instructor" that let the kid shoot the gun?

This story makes you wonder if the "instructor" had ever fired an uzi himself, he should've known better.

And that's just it. Even a standard 9mm handgun has a decent kick. Far more than an 8 year old could hope to keep under control. An uzi is a 9mm firing constantly. This wasn't so much a horrible tragedy as it was statistical probability manifesting itself.

I think the sad indictment of America's gun culture is the comments at the end from the police stating they havent laid charges as they are still researching the law. I'd say reckless endangerment and involuntary manslaughter are two obvious ones in a sane world.

No age limit or licenses required to shoot machine guns, handguns, rifles or shotguns!!!
If that isn't asking for trouble, I don't know what is.

i don't see how anyone can begin to justify this. why a 8 year old would ever need to fire an uzi is beyond me. even if you are ted nugent and feel like you have to hunt your own food, i would think that you still wouldn't pair a kid with an automatic. sure, if you want to start getting your kid familiar with pistols and stuff at a young age, it might not be my cup of tea, but at least there's some logic.

there's absolutely no reasoning behind this. sounds like the gun show is just a place for idiots to get together and be idiots. if i was the mom i would immediately divorce the husband and sue anyone i could for as much as i could.
