Default Go anywhere Internet service

I'd like to cancel my home Internet service and replace it by subscribing to one of the services from someone like Bell or Rogers where you get the stick and can access Internet from anywhere you can get a signal.

I'm interested in hearing from the techies here how this works and maybe get a recommendation for Bell vs. Rogers (or anyone else that might offer it). Bell and Rogers seem to have similar prices. Any advice?

Okay here is the deal back in the day Fido was planning on being the company that offered this service in Canada, the first and only. However they did not feel they had the clientele to offer something like this with their finances.

When Rogers stepped in and bought Fido, along with that came this infrastructure for this Portable Internet. Now Rogers has the pocket, and this was actually the main reason Rogers bought Fido as they were no competition for the big 3.

So when Rogers was getting approval by the CRTC to make the deal final, Bell went down to the states and bought the company, the ONLY company, that could provide Rogers with these modems for that type of service.

In the end Rogers and Bell ended up coming to a deal where Bell could use the towers and Rogers could buy the modems. Otherwise Bell was not going to manufacture any modems that would be compatible for the now Rogers system. Yes even huge multi-billion dollar companies can fight like school kids.

This is how Inukshuk was born.

So for "reception" you will not find a difference. I would see who is offering the best deal at the time. Customer service isn't a concern as its Bell and Rogers so expect the worst in the world

However remember it is a "portable internet service" not a "mobile internet service". So you can take it where you want but it will not do hand offs so you could not be moving much. It is a pretty neat service if I could not get Shaw Xtreme I would probably have this product as all you need is a wall plug in to surf.

Are you thinking Aircard or Portable Modem?

She probably had an Aircard...I thought you were talking about the portable internet from Rogers/Bell not Aircard access.

I was. I don't know the difference. Maybe I should be considering the other options. What are an aircard and portable modem? I the best service at the best price, that I can use anywere, if possible, even on a cruise ship. What does an aircard cost? What is a portable modem and what is the cost? What is recommended if I want service anywhere for a reasonable cost?

I just talked with her and she says she has Bell wireless Internet (Novatel Wireless P720 PC card). She did use it while we were driving on a highway and she got uninterrupted service as we moved around. Which service is this and which would be best for me? I want a service that I can use anywhere, is not expensive and that I can use in the States without much extra cost.

Well first she has an aircard.

You let me know when you find that service

Within Canada you are looking at:

$25 - 4MB
$40 - 8MB
$60 - 30MB
$100 - 250MB

If you go to the states I believe you pay $6/MB.

If you are going to be in the states a bit I would check out Sprint or one of the big companies to see what they offer for the same service and what the roaming is in Canada.
