Default Does anyone here "arm up" in Calgary?

So I was talking with my lil cousin in high school, and he's telling me that he carrys around weapons "just in case" and apperently he's not the only one.

Personally, I think its pretty stupid for obvious reasons and my cousin's IQ is probably in double digits - there are a few high schoolers here, does anyone feel the need to "arm up" in Calgary?

Does the tire iron in the back of my truck count?

Seriously, my little cousin has an affinity for weapons as well. He seems to think it's cool. I've often thought that maybe a swift punch in the face would prove that a weapon doesn't help when you're lying on the ground. But I like the kid. I don't like everything about him, but he's a good kid.

I remember the pressures that surrounded me in high school. I got into a bunch of fights and the ones I lost were often followed up by a decision to bear arms. I ended up a bit too lazy to actually pick up my giant jack knife and put it in my pocket. Prolly a good thing.

Your cousin is probably telling you this with hopes of approval. Don't diss him too badly, but guide him away from it. Telling him he's a moron will only make him think that you're dated and stupid. Telling him that real men don't need to fight, let alone stab or shoot people will make him listen a tiny bit. Telling him that there are times and places where you need to defend yourself or someone else, but that a real man has his weapons attached to his wrists will make him listen.
Give him the goods. Tell him that he wont win every fight, but that he will never be "that guy" that pulled out a knife and ended up in jail with some real sh1t to think about if he sticks to fists. And also, some martial arts training is a great way to kill time, stay fit and (hey!) learn how to disarm (or defend himself from) a dirty SOB that brings a g'd knife to school.

I never leave the house without my trusty AK47. I feel really safe all the time.

Agreed. As a US Postal service worker in a state that now allows employees (with some exceptions) to bring concealed weapons onto workplace property (we have to leave them in our cars darn it) I'm gonna start packin' soon. You know how WE are. Ah yeah an old joke. Anyway I love kids but was too chicken to have any I guess. What do you tell them nowadays? It's always been tough to be a kid. It just seems like the stakes are raised. Just let them know you love them I guess. Guns. Geez. Poor kids.

And the Plasma Rifle in the 40 watt range.

Just tell him no kind of man uses a weapon against an unarmed man, but if you're if you're going at it with a guy who has a weapon - anything is fair game.

And hope he figures it out from there.

Tell him he'll realize that it's pretty dumb once he sees that little petty high school feuds don't amount to anything and are incredibly pathetic.

Plus, remind him he's in Calgary, not Compton. Anybody packin' on the streets of Cowtown has no idea how safe this city is compared to other places in the world.

Ugh news like this is depressing as I have a younger brother currently going into high school. Now I could never seen him wanting or feeling the need too carry any type of weapon but regardless things like this make me feel like high schools have become an unsafe place. I could see it starting to happen when I graduated, and from what I have herd from my little sister who graduated this year this are pretty out of hand. From her account violence was a regular occurrence and there were places on and off the school grounds that she couldn’t go because she feared for her safety. A lot of people she knew some she considered friends carried knifes to school everyday, and a few kids even brought hand guns to school.

What the hell is wrong with kids that they have to fear each other? I lived near the crack Mac's for over a year and never felt the need to arm myself if I went near there.

The worst thing I ever experienced was a native chick yelling at me for turning as I walked past her peeing in a corner.

I carry a knife on me every day, not necessarily for defense purposes, but more for utility purposes.

LOL, I have fond memories of that corner working in the building across the street for a few years. While it isn't a safe corner by any stretch of the imagination, you could pretty much pummel any loitering teenager there with your own two fists; no need for a weapon. Plus, it's really the homeless guys bother people the most. I remember one guy, he would always hold the door open to Mac's for a tip, and I think I gave him a dollar once. He was pretty stoked.

Yeah, I did the same because I needed it for work.

As for bringing weapons to school, its seems unnecessary to me. If these people want to get crazy then you just have to mind your own business and stay away from them I guess.

That's a good point.

If you get in a fight and you have a weapon that you are willing to use, then there are 2 likely scenerios. The first is that the person is weaker than you and you don't need the weapon, in which case, why bother even having it. The second is that the person is stronger than you and you do need it. The problem here is that if the person is stronger, then there is a good chance that the weapon will end up in their possession. And if it doesn't, then they are going to go all out to incapacitate you. By pulling a weapon, you raise the stakes and could easily end up dead. The other possibility is that you are forced to use the weapon and end up in jail for the rest of your young life.

You should probably explain prison rape to him, and maybe he will smarten up.

Anyone else seen In Bruges?

You aren't allowed to pull a weapon in a fight unless the other guy does first. Or if he knows karate, or comes at you with a bottle, because those are both considered lethal weapons. You can shoot him down if that's the case.
