Default Zurich tops world's most liveable cities; Calgary 25th

http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...a-e67420a0d2cc

Interesting that Calgary, the lowest-ranked Canadian city in the ranking, still places above the highest-ranked US city (Honolulu, 28th).

Ottawa was ranked 19th on the global list. The top five North American cities were all in Canada, led by Vancouver, Toronto at 15th, Ottawa, Montreal (22nd) and Calgary (25th).

The rankings are based on 39 key quality-of-living determinants such as political stability, schooling, socio-cultural environment, recreation, housing and natural environment.

I'd love to hear the argument for Ottawa and Toronto being ahead of Calgary based off that criteria. Maybe it's all those "There's no place like this commercials we're getting pounded with on TV?

And yet so many Canadians seem to want to move in America's direction when it comes social systems and economics...

After living in Auckland, I'm not surprised it's in 5th spot.

Only crappy thing about New Zealand is that their fashion is 5 years behind.

I'd love to check out Zurich and Geneva as potential cities to live in though, that would be cool.

Maybe it's the fact that the Ottawa area has as many real universities as all of Alberta?

That being said, I don't think there is a huge difference in the ratings between 15th and 25th.

Ottawa is more beautiful, IMO, and have a stable and strong economy with government and high-tech companies.

Does this mean Calgary dropped on the list from last year?

I was in Zurich last Sept. and 2 beers in a pub was $17. The dollar being pretty much equal with the franc.
Restaurant was pretty expensive also.

The new torrential monsoon / rain season, and the saturation of emo kids in this city of probably lowered Calgary's ranking, at least in my opinion....

Monsoon? Emo kids? Is Calgary turning into Vancouver?

As I see it, Vancouver has only 4 things to dislike:

The weather

The culture

The cost of living

The petty crime

Unfortunately, those are some pretty big fat things.

And I've heard Switzerland is boring.

Really, everywhere sucks.

Well the petty crime is much more than that

Also i would like to add that you could be tased if you don't pay your transit fare.

Quote:
It was reported that officers tasered offenders for the mispayment of transit fares. The B.C. Civil Liberties Association has filed a complaint against the police for use of Tasers but police deny that the weapons were used for fare mispayment and defend their use of Tasers.[7] Transit police have used Tasers 10 times between January 2007 and April 2008
but ya everywhere does suck - but this is about being livable....i find it hard to really rank anyone...pros and cons

its interesting cuz ive seen a similar "survey" conducted by an american company that ranked SF as number 14. so i guess it depends who does the survey..thats my opinion at least.

Ah but in Vancouver, drug trafficking is considered a petty crime.

And murders only happen here to drug dealers and hookers (and the occasional innocent bystander). So, really, they're no big deal either.
