Default How to find new music - my method (plz post yours)

As I have gotten older, I have discovered I no longer have the necessary "commercial" tolerance to listen to the radio. The same way Tivo and DVR have spoiled me for watching live television by how I can skip commercials at will, online music service has destroyed my ability to listen to radio ads and inane childish DJ banter.

Unfortunately I found this was leading to me not listening to new music.

So here's how I find new music.

#1 Record hours and hours of music videos overnight.
#2 When you get up in the morning, watch videos when you eat breakfast. If you like the song, email the name and artist to yourself.
#3 If you dislike the song, skip it and go to the next one.

Here's the key - after you have seen the video once, you can determine what song is playing visually. So you can watch them at 5x fast forward and quickly jump to videos you haven't seen. You can get through a 6 hour block of videos in 45 minutes.

#4 Go to Pandora.com and type in the name of the songs you liked. Listen to the recommended similar music, and add any you like to your original email list.

#5 Go to myspace and try to find the band's page. Usually they will have 5 or 6 of their newer songs available for streaming. Again, write down which ones you like.

#6 Now go to your favorite online service and download your new music.

You'll be amazed what you might find out you like.

Anybody else got a "music system"?

I use Winamp to listen to lots of streaming radio across as many genres as I can think of.

Hell, there is even a station that plays nothing but 8-bit synth music.

I read reviews... I can pretty much scan and key phrases will jump out or eliminate the band ... like "seductively makes you want to weep" would be a pass.

Also will go to a site like Amazon. Look for a band I like, then on that page there will be CDs that people (who bought the band I like) bought. So I will follow the trail from there ... still is not fool proof, a lot of people like crappy music...

iTunes. I usually download their single of the week and also look at the "You might also like" side on albums I've bought.

I use the "You might also like" on Amazon, I read reviews, and sometimes I just walk into Megatunes and pick up a few artists I have kind of heard of but never listened to before.

I follow the Flames89 method. I read a lot of reviews and try to see what's new out there. Compilation sites like metacritic.com are good.

You could also stick with magazines and online sources you trust. I like pitchforkmedia.com a lot (I know, I know...) and so I read their reviews and test things out through that. I also read their interviews/features on artists I like, and see what they're listening to.

The Amazon trick is really good too. I've found tonnes of new interesting music through the 'other people bought' feature.

And, lastly, just talking to people is pretty good. Hearing what friends with similar taste like can really tune you in to artists you might not otherwise discover.

I used to use Pandora, but now they chased me off there... something about being a Canadian...

I haven't really found a good replacement for that, but I do listen to quite a bit of CBC radio3.

I have a Sirius radio, a pad and pen on my console, and if I hear a song I like I write it down. While driving with my knees. Speeding. Between text messages. But only after I've finished my cigarette and coffee.

Shoot, I do the exact same thing! except I also do this while passing on the inside.

haha, but seriously I don't have serius, but like itunes internet radio selection. Most stations say what the band/song is. I also check out myspace, talking to friends, goto live shows, etc...

last.fm has proven to be a more than adequate alternative, speaking personally.

That's totally unsafe.
You should throw your cigarette out the window before proceeding to do the rest of that.

I would, but there's a fire ban. Any other time of the year it's totally OK though. That's what street sweepers are for.
