Default Top 10 franchises in pro sports

Maybe not in the right form, but it belongs in both the hockey form and the "other sports form."

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Top10/2007...16924-sun.html

Can't believe the OILERS made this list.

Just seems weird to have soccer (football) on the list. Ditto Tiger Woods. If you're going to include an international sport, why not take edit* Oilers off the list and put All Blacks on there. And Tiger, well, apples and oranges. Yeah, you could call him a franchise, but it is a one man machine, not a perpetuating machine like the word 'franchise' sort of alludes to.

That is one of the weirdest lists I've ever seen on that topic. I wouldn't even know where to start debating and contesting his picks. A few of the choices actually belong on the list, but not where they're positioned. Montreal Canadiens ahead of Man U AND Dallas Cowboys?

That post has to be irony. No-one can claim that soccer teams like Manu or RM doeasn't belong to top 10 globally most greates franchises. Maybe that seems just that way when you assume that europe is a country somewhere far away. Ask an african,Asian or european kid do they regognize Boston celtics and then ask same about RM or ManU. For yopu guys these kinds of lists should be made as greatest ___:s of north america.

A little surprised that Alex Rodriguez was mentioned instead of Joe Dimaggio in the Yankees blurb.

Well a very large part of Asia is China and if you ask them if they recognize the Houston Rockets the answer will be YES. Ditto the Milwaukee Bucks now that Yi is on that team. Real Madrid is king over there thanks to their visits to Beijing and the fact they used to have Beckham who is hugely popular there.

You are very right about the N.A thing as the list would be ten soccer clubs if it's worldwide.

Exactly what I mean. It just seems like a lopsided top ten. There are two international football teams mixed in with 8 north american sports teams. If you're going to really talk about top ten franchise around the world and in all sports, there's no way the oilers make the list.
There are rugby and cricket franchises. Football franchises from south america and europe. Hell, even ireland has some pretty storied hurling teams.

Aah, now i got it (i think). You were not criticizing inclusion of soccer teams in the list. You were just critizing Oilers. That, I accept. Sorry for almost calling you an geographical narcist.

Well, yeah... Dissing the Oilers. But the Flames don't make the list either. Montreal? Ok. 23 Cups and 100 years...

Arent the All Blacks simply the name for the NZ national rugby team?

If the writer's list is based on win percentage and apperances then the Harlem Globetrotters should make the top ten instead of the Oilers.

Tiger Woods is not a franchise. And Golf is not a sport.

Add that to the reasons this list is lame media filler.

But it is Sun Media, so why would we expect more?

If you put Tiger on the list, then Michael Jordan should be on that list as well.

That list is ridiculous. Its not even worth arguing about.

10. Edmonton Oilers, NHL
9. L.A./Minneapolis Lakers, NBA
8. Green Bay Packers, NFL
7. Manchester United, soccer
6. Boston Celtics, NBA
5. Dallas Cowboys, NFL
4. Montreal Canadiens, NHL
3. Tiger Woods, golf
2. Real Madrid, soccer
1. New York Yankees, baseball

Show that list to someone and ask them what they think the topic or title of the list is... It looks like a random list.

I don't know much about rugby at all so I could be wrong here. But my girlfriend's huge into it(and loves the All-Blacks), and from what I've been told, aren't they famous for being ranked #1 going into tournaments and choking in them all the time, including the World Cup? Sort of the Atlanta Braves of the rugby circuit. I tried to look this up but the stats are too weird to figure out.

That has been the case the last few World Sups. They did win the first one in 1988 and in years between their have been teams that are at the same level of them. However, some of their losses have been head scratchers and it isn't helped by the fact they have been buzz saws through the group stages and always look even more unbeatable than people thought going into the tournament.

I would say it is more like Canada in hockey than the Braves. Just because they are the best team does not mean that it is a guaranteed win. The All-Blacks not only have the best team but probably could put in a great second team as well.

The fact that two hockey teams made the list tells you everything you need to know.

Hockey is a niche sport.
