If you ever go to Montreal you will laugh at Edmonton trying to claim this title.

Edmonton has some nice festivals. when I moved from Edmonton to Winnipeg I was surprised how similar some of the summer events were in the 2 cities (both good though)

Agreed that Montreal would laugh at Edmonton's weak claim to "festival city". Montreal has at least four or five festivals that are better than anything Edmonton (or anywhere else in Canada frankly) have.

Agreed. F1, Just for Laughs, jazz and film festivals all within about a month of each other. Give me a break, Edmonton....

Many of the festivals Edmonton has are held in any other major Canadian city, including Calgary. And while Edmonton is an above average festival town, I have to agree that the slogan is laughable.
It is, however, closer to reality than "City of Champions".

^ I think the City of Champions name was actually given by a former mayor as recognition of those who responded to the aftermath of the devastating Tornado.
People automatically associate the word "champion" with competitive sports, so it's kind of silly.
As for festivals, Edmonton has a decent quality and quantity for its size, same with Calgary.
Slogans are pretty meaningless anyway.

All I know is that Fringe is their version of Stampede with less silicone implants, but the same decreased level of inhibition.

In their defence, they were named the Canada's cultural Capital in 2007. In the summer time, every weekend they have a different festivals, not all that appear in other places as well. Montreal has the larger Fringe, comedy, and film festivals, but I think Edmonton claiming "Festival City" as part of their tourism strategy. I can see the street performer festival from outside my window, so I may check that out after work today

that's certainly the story but its always been a bit fishy. I lived in Edmonton in the early 90s, only about 5 years after the Tornado, and no-one there I knew associated the monicker City of Champions with the Tornado. the Tornado was obviously devastating but 'champion' isn't usually the first word that comes to mind at the time of an event like that, yet at the same time their sports teams were cleaning up everywhere.
just admit it...you were bragging about your teams...its ok...they were good then

Umm.. the Fringe festival is a theater festival. So I don't think it would be considered their version of the Stampede. Plus, Calgary also has a Fringe festival I believe.
Maybe Edmonton's version of the Stampede would be Klondike Days?

Ah, thanks. I've actually never been to it, nor do I really know anything about it, other than its somewhat similar to the Stampede, what with all the rides and stuff.

I meant more of the "Stampede for single men and women" and less cowboy hats and unconfortable shoes.

They dropped the whole Western thing. It's more like a much much smaller scale version on the CNE(Canadian National Exhibition,Toronto) or the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition, Vancouver). The same rides and food from Stampede, although I heard that the bands are different and I think the music is separate from the Capital Ex. They have the bands and music come under "EdgeFest" around the same time.
The Taste of Edmonton is coming up soon (which Calgary has) and the August long weekend, it's the Heritage Festival, which is even better food with stands from over 60 countries serving ethnic food.

Basically every city in Canada has its equivalent to the Stampede in terms of rides/fair. In Regina it is called Agribition and in Saskatoon it is called Exhibition IIRC. Both are in the coming weeks before Stampede. Im sure Winterpeg has one too.
In EDM it used to be Klondike days and it is now Capital Ex. and it is held from the 16th to the 26th of July IIRC (this year).
