Senators lose to the tough Jackets.

Not that we were suprised.
The Senators played backup goalie Numrinen again this game 2nd game in a row.

We were hoping he could steal a game for us. He did play pretty decent but it was not enough against a strong team like the Jackets.
But Turco needed a rest so we gambled and lost.

PANTHERS LOSE A HEARTBREAKER

Panthers lose yet again to a much better Hurricans team but kept both games decently close. Jokenin took advantage of being on the 3rd line today by notching a pair of goals.

In an attempt to get Martinek completely healthy, Panthers GM moved him to the 2nd line. This was obviously not enough as he was a -2 on the day. Martinek will find himself on the 3rd line paring next game against the struggling stars.

Flames win, Flames win, Flames win!!!

After taking a thorough beating at the hands of the Nashville Predators the other night, the Calgary Flames musta been some ticked off.

Flames pound the Sharks into sushi with a 7-2 drubbing. Flames fired 34 shots on the Sharks keeper and only gave up 12 themselves. One must wonder if Irbe is the goalie of the future for the Flames but then again he;s a .800 sv pct.

Jarome Iginla and Steve Konowalchuk led the way with 3 points each. Jarome and Steve were also first and second stars in the game.
Players resting were Marco Sturm, Ken Klee, Scott Stevens and Martin Biron. thats taking four very important players out of our lineup, but it had to be done.

Flames are still looking to up grade and trade talks are in the works with a number of teams.

Lets hope the winning streak continues.

SABRES GO TO OT....AGAIN
Gerber comes up big in costly win

Giving starting goalie JS Giguere a much needed rest, backup Martin Gerber finally won a game for the Sabres. The Sabres went to OT for I believe the 6th straight time, edging out the Flyers. It was a big game for the Sabres top 5 unit of Palffy,Prospal,Isbister,Regehr and Niedermayer. The game was costly for Buffalo though as Steve Rucchin went down with a day to day injury. Rucchin had been sparking the Sabres 2nd line of late.

This leaves the Sabres (who have dealt Centres Drury,Hecht and Rupp in recent weeks) precious thin at Centre Ice. Josef Vasicek will move to the 2nd line, whereas Riku Hahl and Ryan vandenBussche will try and center the bottom 2 trios. The Sabres continue to look, non-desperately, for options at center ice.

Kim Johnsson remains pointless as a Sabre. Lubomir Visnosky is yet to make his Sabre debut

In what is becoming an all too familiar situation the Tampa Bay Lightning lost another game on Tuesday. It was their fourth loss in a row and the 12th on the season. Felix Potvin was able to somehow fool the coach and get himself the start. He then proceeded to let in five goals on only 14 shots. Unfortunately for the Lightning by the time Grahame came in to relieve Potvin it was already too late for the anemic Tampa offense to make a comeback.

GM Moon:

“It wasn’t a great game by Potvin but the team on a whole has to play much better defense. There have been too many occurances of lax play when some of the players are on the ice.”

The Lightning play tomorrow against the New York Rangers and hope that the line changes will result in a better effort.

Well, back-to-back games with Flyers and Thrashers is not where Hawks were expected to pick up points. But at least newly acquired players are making immediate impact and Therien took a torch from Bulis on that one.

This time once again Hawks stormed out of the gate, scoring at 40 seconds into play. Newcomer Chris Therien set up Hawks leading scorer Espen Knutsen to open the score. Encouraged Hawks had a good 1st period, outshooting Thrashers 9-8. However, near the end of 1st stanze, Jordan Leopold put an unassisted marker to tie the game at 1. Second period saw Thrachers carrying the play with 10-6 shots, but Johnson allowed a goal only once.

In the 3rd a live show by Hawks PP begins as they allowed a shorthanded marker, falling below even mark on the PP. However, less than 2 minutes later Hawks PP scored as Hossa from Yachmenev and Therien notched his 2nd in as many games. After reading game report, Hawks GM failed to figure out who of Thrashers was in the box that time. Anyway, Hawks made it close 2-3 with 11 minutes to go. But Thrasher Adam Deadmarsh sealed the deal coming out of the penalty box and running away for a last goal of the night. Hawks don't have any time to think about this game as Oilers are coming on tomorrow.

Wild Put the Brakes to Avs Streak


They may have won the game, however it came at a big price.

An already tired Minnesota Wild squad was impressive in a 6-2 win over the Avalanche, however the victory was bitter-sweet, as the Wild lost d-man Willie Mitchell for up to two weeks with a shoulder injury. In addition the Wild have at least 3 other players battling nagging injury, something that could eventually catch up with them.

However, despite concerns about be short-handed during one of the team’s busiest stretches, the Wild have to pleased with their win. Minnesota Wild limited the Avs, who had one nine straight coming into the game, to just 16 shots, and chased the red-hot Roman Turek from the nets.

Other positives on the night included the play of Andrew Brunette who notched 3 points and was named the game’s first star, and the debut of David Legwand who also put up 3 points. Other goal scorers for the Wild were Richard Zednik with his team leading 10th, Robert Reichel, Martin Lapointe, and Sami Kapanen.

However, concerns remained over the status of some key players. In addition to Mitchell, David Vyborny is still suffering from a number of nagging injuries and will likely be scratched from tomorrow’s game. Sami Kapanen also injured in the third. Although the injury was not serious the Wild may choose to hold Kapanen out of tomorrow’s matchup to allow the high scoring winger a chance to recover.

Tomorrow’s game is against a struggling San Jose club that got off to a quick start this season, but has fallen on hard times recently. Farhall warns that they are a dangerous club.

“The Sharks showed early this season that they were capable of knocking off good teams. They are a good team and due for a win”.

Garth Snow is expected to get the start.

Oilers notch 5th win in last 6 and extend point streak to 6

The Oilers endured another cross continent flight, and came out flying as newly aquired Radek Dvorak wasted no time establishing himself as an Oiler by scoring 57 seconds into the game on an early Oiler powerplay. Dvorak playing his first game as an Oiler deflected a Jay Bouwmeester shot past Felix Potvin. The Lightning nodded the score at the 3:34 mark when Mike Johnson beat Jane Hurme with a wrister in the slot. The goals continued to come fast and furious though, as Scott Hannan put the Oilers up just 7 seconds later. Hannans shot from just over the centre red line handcuffed Felix Potvin "Tommy Salo" style and bounced over the cat and into the net. Just 35 seconds later a red hot J.P. Dumont intercepted a careless cross ice pass by Kiril Safronov and walked in alone beating a slow old looking Cat the the glove side. The Lightning did manage to strike one more time in the first as Bryan Smolinski tallied a powerplay marker making it 5 goals in the first 12:57 of the game.

The Oilers took control of the game in the second period as they managed three unanswered goals to take a commanding 6-2 lead. The first was Marian Hossa's 6th of the season and 4th in his last 3 games at the 3:31 mark when the slick Slovak finished off a nice passing play that involved Brian Leetch and Vincent LeCalvalier. 4 minutes and 8 seconds later Jason Spezza got off the schnide when he scored his 1st of the season. After the Lightning yanked Potvin, the Oilers struck replacement John Grahame just 29 seconds later when Lecalvalier took the puck behind the net from Hurme and rushed up the ice looking like Jean Bellivue and fed a perfect pass to Alex Frolov who beat the cold Lightning tender high blocker for his 6th of the season.

From that point on the Oilers put in in cruise control, possibly looking ahead to tommorrow's contest with the Hawks. The Lightning did manage an ealry third period goal by Brian Smolinski, but were thwarted on two power play chances and the game finished up 6-3.

Radek Dvorak was named first Star of the game with a goal, and two helpers giving him 17 points on the season. Lecavalier picked up two more assists giving him 4 in his two games as an Oiler. Jani Hurme picked up his second win in as many games for the Oilers turning aside 19 shots in a relatively stress free night for the Finnish net minder. Next up for the Oilers is a game against the struggling Hawks. GM Sylvanfan cautioned that it would be a difficult game because the Hawks are well overdue for a win. "Teams on long downslides are know to pull huge upsets to end the slide and tommorrow is no different. We need to ensure that the team is well prepared as we've already given away enough points this season. Despite what the records might suggest there are no easy games in this league."

After being down 3-0 after the first 2 periods the Predators decided to pick up the pace with 4 goals in the 3rd and another in OT to get the win. Lemieux led the way with a whopping 4 assists. Mario told me yesterday that the shape he is in he could surpass the 200 point mark this season.
