Cursing by the "Fairer" gender.
http://www.newscientist.com/channel/...d=health_rss20
In summary, British Linguist who studied MySpace pages discovered that females on said site curse equally as much as guys. That swear words reside in the right side of the brain, so the area of the brain damaged by strokes, (left side) doesn't really affect the capability of an individual(not gender specific) to swear. F and S seem to be the most common swear words.
The other thing of note was that cursing in groups promotes social bonding.
I'm not adverse to swearing, and there've been previous workplaces where swearing was pretty much mandatory... did anyone have anything interesting to say about the seven words you seldomly hear on tv?

I think the reason cursing promotes social bonding is becasue it is such an informal thing to do, and something you can only do around people you really feel comfortable around.
Think about it, most people won't swear in front of their boss, but as soon as their boss starts dropping bombs, you feel like you're buds because he's comfortable enough to swear in front of you...it just brings the casualness of any conversation down.

I agree. When you join a new rec hockey team the first thing everyone does in the locker room is curse up a blue streak. "Bonding" then takes the form of raunchy stories and dirty jokes for the first little while.
Then we start sharing our feelings.

All the girls I dated curse either somewhat more than me, or far more much than me.
I will admit I do not curse much (I prefer to make statements of impact, even when mad, and often curses become so common they lose that.
) and many girls I have dated have from from, well far Canadian Eastern communities...
But in my experience I have heard girls curse as often if not MORE then men. They just do it more casually so it slips by. Not surprised at all.
Really, people are people.

It's my experience that Calgarians swear far more than people from most other places I've been to, and that swearing is far more socially acceptable in Calgary than most other places I've been. I don't know why, but wherever I go outside of Calgary my usual acceptable level of swearing is considered a little too much.

Frankly I kinda like it when a girl swears (I mean not excessively) I think it has to do with some of the arguments above. You'll swear around people you're comfortable with, so it's a sign of acceptance. But there's also the stereotype that girls aren't supposed to swear, so when they do it's hot, nasty hot, like Poison "Talk Dirty To Me" hot.
In the end I'm not surprised that it's about the same male to female for swearing.
As for Daradon's comments, I'm not surprised in the least that the East Coast girls swear more. I once had a living arrangements myself, another guy, and girl. When the girl moved in the swearing in the household increased ten fold. I tell you I almost felt bad at laughing when she'd get mad at something and scream "fataing fata fata"

He also delivered the same salute to protestors in Salmon Arm, and members of the House of Commons in the House of Commons itself. Classy dude that Pierre fella.

I swear a lot. I like it when chicks swear, especially when it's only every now and then. I like it when a really conservative girl gets really nasty once the clothes are off and the sheets are burning. That is freakin' awesome.
I tend to tone it down at work, again except for people that I am comfortable with. Never swear with or at a customer as regardless of their tone, I try to be professional.

I played soccer for many years and you should hear some of the nasty things said to one another on the pitch. You boys would be shocked!

Nothing is a bigger turn off than a girl that swears alot. If she has an f bomb in every sentence, she's not for me. And like a true hypocrite, I swear way too much. All those manual labour jobs in my early 20s. Hard habit to kick, but I'm making progress.

Could never understand why people feel the need to swear constantly.

I find swearing just for the sake of swearing kind of pointless. However, I grew up on a farm, an offspring of a long line of farmers. I was privy to a centuries' old body of rural cussin' that liberally incorporated the usual f bombs and such, but the phraseology used really elevated it to highly descriptive, colourful verbal art form. I consider it my sacred duty to pass this rich body of profanity on to my children ... male and female.
