Calgary Ski Jumps will close at the end of this year....

Good old Government, supporting sports. Canada is finally getting close to having a good ski jump team and they go close the Jumps.

LIBRIALS need to get ousted out of office (Not supporting amateur spots, they spend all the money on things that don't work like gun control and add ageneses that should not get the money)

Brutal. I would think this is an attempt by CODA to get as many medals as possible in 2010, so they're taking money away from sports that have lesser chances of getting medals and giving them to sports that have a better chance (provocative statement, I know )

I would have hoped that a lot of money would be put into all sports so that there would be a broad spectrum of ass kicking. But not this time around. A shame. At least we'll have those 3 gorgeous structures on the west end of town to remind us of better days

I've always wanted to try it too...oh well, at least the bobsleigh run is still around. Which reminds me, I saw on the news yesterday that Chelios is going to be in town for the America Cup event at COP this weekend, I think? Good chance to heckle him...

I was expecting this to happen as soon as Vancouver got the 2010 games. There is no way that they would want two of the same facilities so close together. Vancouver's will be newer and better so I expect all the COP facilities to close down once Vancouver is ready. Too bad though.

This is sad to hear... hopefully they can find a nice corporate sponsor to help them out. And I hear the Alberta government is debt-free and has some sort of surplus
Honestly, this isn't even just about Canadian teams having a place to train. It's about attracting teams from abroad, and attracting tourists to the area. The legend of the '88 Olympics still lives on pretty strong in Calgary, and it's sad to see some of the venues deteriorating because the government (mainly) hasn't lent a hand in helping with the upkeep. I know Vancouver got 2010, but the venues in Calgary shouldn't be forgotten.

Isn't there some Centre of Excellence thing planned for COP? I could be just imagining this... or else they felt the ski jumps should not be included in this endeavour??

Hopefully there's way to keep 'em going... the American Race thought they wer cool enough to visit

Exactly. I said the same thing when Vancouver got 2010. I could see the Oval, COP, Bobsled, and the Nordic Center falling into disuse and getting the funding axe. I hear that Vancouver buried their Speed Skating Oval in Richmond rather than at SFU so hopefully the National team and the Center for Excellence in long track stays here!

Calgary's Oval and Bobsled are still top 2-3 in the world, they will still be in use for a long time.

I could see them taking down the towers and adding more area for skiing.

PS: I think the Big tower is to small for jumping now.

I heard they had to cut back on the Centre, all the funds are going to 2010.

Lol build the Centre next summer, up grade other things and by 2010, canada will have a very strong team.

Or we could just be happy to let the USA win every thing.

Problem with the ski jumps was that they were always white elephant.

While I and 30,000 others enjoyed watching ski jumping live in 1988, just a 35 min drive away (as opposed to having to drive to Banff or K country), the location basically in the wide open was as poor as a location weather wise as possible.

Numerous World Cups before and after, and even the Olympic Competition had to be delayed thanks to high winds and/or chinook conditions coming from the west (cross wind). Thus, World Cups and international tours stopped coming here soon after the late 80's, thanks to the unpredictable weather.

Even Canadians couldn't properly train on them, evident by the lack of any ski jumpers in Olympics from Canada, since 1994.

Too bad...such a good landmark, and a constant reminder of the Olympics...but short of putting up permanant wind screens to block the cross winds., theres not much that can be done to make it regulalrly used.

Yeah, I agree with Browna. It's pretty windy up there, and in ski jumping cross winds=bad. There 's not a lot of snow accumulation either.

If they really wanted to save it they could always name it the "Jean Chretien" memorial jumps......I'm sure there's a few billion kicking around somewhere in his legacy fund that has yet to be spent on golf courses.
