Passport Renewal / Retention
I was wondering if anyone has renewed their passport recently? Mine isn't up for another year or so, but with the changes to the renewal rules it has been on my mind. One of the conditions for using the fast-track system is that you have to submit your old passport, but I don't know if I want to do that. I had a passport before my current one, but in order to keep it I let it expire, then applied for a new one the next week. I didn't have to surrender it because it had been issued to me more than five years (ie: five years plus a week) before my then-new, now-current passport. I have a bunch of stamps in my current one that I don't want to lose. I'll probably scan it anyways, but nothing beats flipping through the passport itself. What happens when you apply for renewal and ask to get your passport back? I've heard things ranging from they punch holes spelling VOID through it (damaging and destroying many stamps) all the way to merely clipping the corner off it so it is readily identifiable as old, and yet the pages aren't damaged the same way.
