Murder rates
Wichita, KS this year....32 homocides in 7 months. Population 380,000
I'm curious as to what the rate is in Calgary...given that the city is over 2X as large.
I bring this up because there have been 2 murders on my mail route in the last 6 days....it just seems like 32 in 7 months for a city this size is out of whack. I realize there is a difference in culture as well, but I'll be checking on other similarly sized American cities.
Anybody have the numbers for Calgary?

The national rate in 2005(best numbers I could find) is 5.6 murders per 100,000 people. The area I live in(Quad Cities) is around 2.1, last I heard.

By "national", you mean the United States, right?
(Keeping in mind most posters on this board are in Canada. )

Yep, I should have specified. I was referring to the original poster, who, evidently, is in Kans-as.

I wonder why it rises so much in the late 60's and hasn't really tapered off the last decade... must be RAP MUSIC

But it has tapered off, quite significantly.
An interesting theory in Freakonomics would suggest that it is due to legalized abortion. Putting the values aside about abortion it is plausable.

I didn't like Freakonomics because the whole book had only one idea behind it. What a waste.
The murder rate in Canada is pretty low. About two per month in our city I'd think.

I think that was the joke. People say rap music encourages killings... clearly it doesn't when the highest murder/capita rate was in 1980.
And you're right, it certainly is plausible as sad as that is.

I didn't look at the numbers, but has the murder rate gone down since DNA became available as evidence?
In the mid 90's they needed you blood at the scene (most famous case then was OJ's trial.) Now they can track you to the scene by sweat, hair, pretty much anything.
Stuff like that makes people think its just easier to give the ex her stupid Supertramp CD.

Let's not forget the massive amounts of beatings, assaults, and near death injuries that are sustained in Calgary throughout the year. To me, those are far more worrysome because they are more random and frequent than murders in Calgary, where a pre-existing relationship usually exists between victim and murderer.

And let's also not forget about the body being bulled from under some bridge yesterday that police suspect was a result of 'foul play'... that would bring us to 18.
