Just look at these numbers from the United Nations. More people smoke in Canada than in nearly every other country. More than Jamaica. More than the Netherlands.
Dude, that has to tell you something.
Do you want to end up like Papua New Guinea or Micronesia?
Stop giggling. They are too real countries.

I wouldn't mind seeing a province by province break down... I think we know which province is bumping the national average up.

what a proud day.
unfortunately the bill to decriminalize under 30g fell through thanks to the stupid conservatives, and most people seem to think that it already passed.
i love this:
Dr. de Goias says the pot-smoking rates don't bother him, and he rarely sees people seeking treatment for marijuana dependence. But he thinks it's symptomatic of a collective lack of ambition.

Not surprising. Americans are always telling me how Canada just seems more laidback. Maybe this has something to do with it.

Hold on here. Was it not the Liberals who failed to even bring the bill to a vote?

And for good reason - the only thing stupid about it is not the conservatives, but the liberal logic behind decriminalizing something that still requires a criminal act to take place. You cant possess pot unless its sold to you which would under liberal thinking would still be a criminal offence - there is zero logic or thought to that - back to the drawing board.

I would say Ontario and Quebec would give BC a run for most pot smokers in Canada.

I would like to see a lot of laws regarding pot either dropped or relaxed just so police and our justice system can put that much more focus and resources into real problems not the people who have a toke to unwind or sell to their buddies. To many crack and meth heads around while the cops here go hardcore after grow ops get some of this other crap off the streets....

so how do you explain the law on tobacco for minors then? it's not illegal for someone under 18 to have a cigarette, but it's illegal for them to buy it or to sell it to them

Ha! Good article. I like how the author of the report had the last name "Dube".
I'm of the opinion that it should be de-criminalized and taxed.

Same reason it's illegal to smoke in most public places these days - health concerns. Tobacco is a huge health care burden, it's in the goverments best interest to target the ages where people start to smoke - it's why advertising is illegal etc...

you misread my question. you said that it's stupid to decriminalize marijuana because there will still need to be an illegal act taking place to possess it. and what i was saying is that there already is a law like that, in where it is illegal for a minor to purchase cigarettes, but perfectly legal for a minor to have them after the fact

Yes i understand- in Nova Scotia it is illegal for kids to posses or smoke a cigarette. But it's still different because legally there are a lot of things a minor can not do depending one age, drive, drink etc..
In this case pot can not be sold to anyone without a criminal act taking place, yet it's perfectly fine to posses. It's stupid and not very logical -
Selling smokes to a minor is also stupid and if your plan is to get everyone to stop smoking, than not very logical.....
Treat pot like smokes and now we talking - but that opens up a whole nother can of warms..

I understand exactly what you're saying, and I think that's a good point. Cigarette's can't be sold to a minor, but a minor can possess them, just as decriminilization would keep the sale of weed illegal, but not posession... makes sense to me, a pretty good parallel.

I think one of the main concepts behind marijuana being a gateway drug is the fact that you have to go to a drug dealer to get it, and the dealer him/herself is the actual 'gateway' to other drugs... since there's a lot better chance of you being offered something harder from a drug dealer than, say, a cigarette/alcohol salesperson over the counter. I think the idea is that marijuana, due to its illegality, forces interested consumers to get in touch with people who may be selling a lot more than marijuana.
When you buy booze and cigarette's the kid across the counter doesn't say 'I've got some even harder, better stuff in the back... wanna try it?'... he just rings you up and sends you on your way.
Though I pretty much agree with you, I wouldn't be surprised to see regular drinkers/smokers as having a higher chance to get involved in other drugs as well (given that they're all drugs, just some are legal for some reason...).

The Government should really just ban Cigarettes and put marijuana as an over the counter "health remedy" -- maybe as a "Stress Reliever". As a non-smoker, I cannot handle the stench coming off most brands of cigarettes, but the sweet smell of MJ is quite nice.
Surely marijuana has more health benefits then tobacco!
