NBC's Chief Executive is NOT happy about Piracy
The US's lowest rated national network shows it's teeth.
Doesn't Mr. Zucker have bigger problems?
Like say...Getting people to watch NBC?
Quote:
The media conglomerate's chief shared a lengthy attack plan in a speech at an antipiracy summit here hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
He wants alleged intellectual property violations to take center stage at all levels of government, from the White House to U.S. embassies around the world. He wants Congress to create dedicated IP enforcement departments and to offer federal grants for state and local governments to escalate their own policing efforts.

I think he needs to calm down and realize the internet is here to stay, and it's up to the networks to make it work. They've run themselves into this situation. A one hour long time slot during prime time now has 19 minutes of advertisements (For those of us keeping score, that's 1/3 of the airtime). How can these networks actually expect people to want to watch that many ads when they can wait until five minutes after the show has ended and download it for free? Maybe it's time to rework the approach.

NBC should use the legal team muscle of parent GE and start suing everyone. Also why not create an anti-piracy team that goes to torrent sites to bring them down etc or upload legit marker files so you can trace the download then sue the downloader?
You cant fight a war with words alone.

Yeah, I record all my shows on PVR then watch them after and skip the ads. But if I miss recording a show I download it for a torrent. 19mins of ad's is alittle over the top. Heroes on monday moved painfully slow due tot he ads.
Arn't most networks offering the shows on the websites to watch anyway?

Because most of the torrent sites are hosted here in Canada....and there is nothing NBC can do about it.

I think amazon.com allowed you download certain shows for free for a while.

Not sure if your being factious (<--Is that the correct spelling)
Instead of adopting the sue everyone for revenue model why don't they get with the times and start something to counter piracy. Offer shows for sale. I have no other option then to pirate them anyway, so I do.
NBC is on shaky ground as their shows are over the air network broadcasts anyways.

Yeah, cause that worked wonders for the record industry. No one downloads music anymore ....
Personally, I'd like to see the television industry adapt to the Internet rather than try to fight it. I'd like to see a day where we pay for content rather than cable service. Fire up a PVR-style device and download the shows you want to watch, ad-free, paying a small fee for each one.

Other options are ad placement in shows. For example in Law & Order there's always somebody drinking something, or the DAs are ordering food in. Instead of the can saying "diet cola" on the side; why not use a Diet Pepsi can? Or have the delivery guy be from Domino's?
People have been looking to get past ads since the VCR came out. 25ish years later and the networks haven't caught on. The reason I skip ads is that they are annoying. However if they were only 10 minutes per hour, and come up with other creative ways of making money, I'd watch more live TV. If in this day and age of HD TV people are watching it on a 19" monitor; obviously they have missed the mark.

Right, thats why they setup their own "team". To either bring those sites down or infect them enough they turn into the next emule.

The Lawsuits are intended for the Google Videos of the world who have a financial stake, not individs.
For individs you use a special "team" to break their sites. Seems pretty easy to me. Same thing everyone does who finds an out of NA cracker is trying to blast a firewall, you send him/her a coded "thanks, but no thanks note".

Just because it's downloaded doesn't mean people are sitting in front of their computers. I download to my iMac and then stream over WiFi to any TV in the house.
I do agree with you on finding new ad models. Why are these people so unimaginative?
I will pay to consume your product. Just deliver it to me in a consistent way at a consistent price in an OPEN format so that I can view it on whatever device I want. Why is that hard?
They've gone and pulled their shows off iTunes and they wonder why people pirate it. There is demand so people fill that demand.

Or show 20 minutes of commercials, and then the run the show start to finish. I heard that's what some networks in Europe do.

They've tried this. The "team" got hacked and 700 megs of the their emails were leaked on the internet. They can't fight this. They're not even smart enough to understand they need to embrace it and set the terms.

lol!
NBC would go bankrupt if they did that.
Many of their shows probably 'gain' publicity because some geek is downloading them from torrent sites....and thus creating interest.
I know I've bought a few cds after downloading them as torrents.

They're already doing that. Heroes season 2 has had the new Nissan SUV as part of the storyline.

And 24 could market a certain cell-phone since they talk on them anyways 90% of the show.

Weren't ads introduced back in the day because TV was free over the air? Now we can pay $50.00 plus per month for channels that have advertisements running at 33% of the airtime.

NBC pulled off iTunes for 2 reasons - the iTunes DRM didn't go far enough and they didn't like that they couldn't set the price to what they wanted.
Hell, House, a Fox show, was pulled off iTunes because it is produced by NBC Productions.
Great idea - let's remove the main legitimate source where people could actually pay for your content.
And the scary thing is just when it looks like media are starting to get the idea (offering DRM free music downloads for sale), others (Sony) just never seem to clue in:

Gabriel asked if it was wrong for consumers to make copies of music which they have purchased, even just one copy. Pariser replied, "When an individual makes a copy of a song for himself, I suppose we can say he stole a song." Making "a copy" of a purchased song is just "a nice way of saying 'steals just one copy'," she said.

Product placement has increased huge over the years. The situation of advertisements is simply a 'we want more money' one. Networks are shameless in pushing the limits of their viewers.
Product placement is alright in my view, and also much more effective. On monday's episode of CSI miami I noticed all the characters were rocking iphones. It makes the products much more appealing than a 30 second ad. Has anyone noticed the volume of commercials is usually louder than the TV show you're watching? According to my marketing prof that's no coincidence. Pretty pathetic.
Good point ken on the HDTV option not being enough for getting people to watch TV shows on TV. Although I will say ad's in HD are a bit more appealing to watch.

The way apple handled that whole situation made me think they aren't profiting very much by making these shows available. I think its more an attempt by jobs to do a favor for the networks. When NBC said it wanted more control...It was as if apple said screw you we've done enough.
