The group recommends empowering youth to make the changes themselves, and specifically targeting those after-school hours for new activities.

Somehow I don't think this is the answer.

Anyone else shudder at the word "empower"?
Give healthcare rebates for people who live healthier lives. That may movitivate parents to boot their kids outside for a bit.

The only thing I could be empowered to do as a teen was to lay around wasting my time. I needed a good swift kick in the backside to be motivated to do anything,
Except with girls, I'd expend energy trying to get laid, but that's entirely not the point.

Maybe if they made phys ed not completely suck balls it would get the kids interested?
90% of the curriculum is Social Dance, Track and Field or Gymnastics. Oh man, those were fun times. I remember Line Dancing, hearing Achy Breaky heart played non-stop and Caddilac Ranch. Ugh.
Sports which actually get you up and moving more than Gymnastics or Dance - Like Floor hockey, basketball, football, rugby or Soccer... Try putting those into Phys Ed more and you might a) have a better grade and b) have more kids interested in it.
Seriously, I can count the number of times on my hand we played floor hockey, but linedancing? Way too much of that junk.

I agree. Lacrosse was outlawed at our school because my all boys gym class got too violent. And we LOVED playing it.

I'm guessing it was the flexed arm hang that did the Canadian teens in again this year. always their achilles heel

Nah, the achilles heel would definately have to do with the standing long jump.

It makes me laugh that they find these results and get all worried, yet schools are banning games like Tag and Field Hockey at recess because "the risk of injury is too high." They force kids to pay docile, gentle, unactive games at school because nobody wants an insurance claim or, god forbid, a lawsuit.

Yes, but you see this idea conflicts with a major philosophy in child education now a days:
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A WINNER OR A LOSER!
You can't have competition in sport anymore because everyone is worried about hurt feelings.
LAME.

I sympathize with you fotz but in our school the girl got to pick and the guy couldn't say no, so fat Donna was on me like a dirty shirt for 8 years. I'm still traumatized.
