Default Thinking about cancelling phone line

Have had the same land line for about 18 years. Thinking about cancelling it. Never answer it, ringers are off. I'll talk on it cause it's there. But.. I think I could do without it. Is there anyway to keep the number since I've had it for so long?

It's a telus line.

Thanks

Are you talking cell or landline phone?

Number portability is available, so you can take that number with you to any other cell company, ditto landline (ie Shaw phone)

I've been about 3 months without a phone (no cell or land line) and it annoys others, but I don't mind. Never having to worry about telemarketers or work phoning is nice. There is always email if you need to communicate with the outside world...

How does it cost you that much? You must have some features on it- either ones you don't use or ones that you forget how much you use. ie- does it have a long distance plan that the wife takes advantage of?

The main reason I keep the landline is to have a number to give to people if they have to have my number. Like the video store, etc.

Also dropping the landline takes you out of the phone book. Not sure how important that is to you.

Me, I went with Shaw's lite phone service. $30 and it gives me caller ID.

with telus you can just a basic line for about 23/month landline,( telus's basic land line costs are regulated by the Gov't) if you are really adamant about keeping your number, go to VOIP provider they can give you a basic line for significantly less ( with worse quality) set up costs may be high, another route is rogers who leases their line through telus but because they are not regulated by the CRTC can offer a basic line for cheap ( approx 15/month- however Roger is not yet available in all areas), to do this you would need to call your new provider 1st and have them cancel your telus services on your behalf, if you directly call Telus you will lose your number

Just go with a cheap VOIP service, or transfer your home phone # over to a cell... just get a cheap pay & talk
Rogers and Virgin you can pay $100 for the year for the phone.

I've been land line free for 6 years. They're only useful for office lines/fax lines or people that talk on the phone alot. If all you do is convey info and make or break plans, stick with the cell and ditch the land line.

As for being reluctant to give up a number you've had for so long, I hear ya. But you've already said that you have the ringer off, so why keep it?

Hey All,
I've been considering making the move myself but have been reluctant due to the fuss that long distance seems to present. (I regularly call the UK and chat with friends for a couple hours a month.....) I've been considering going with the Shaw service but haven't seen a whole lot of positive/negative reviews on it yet - any input is welcome!
Thanks,
JG

Yikes I couldn't live without my landline or my cell phone, I pay $50 for the land line (tons of extra features), and $30 for my cell phone. I'm mainly only send txt messages from my cell.
